Ge Television Repair

By Brad - usenet poster

" "
Any technician who is familiar with the GE TV tuner and mpu shield
connection problem please help.  I am thinking about repairing this problem
myself.  I fix telecommunication equipment for the Air Force and have been
to electronics and soldering schools.  But, I don't know where to begin to
fix this common GE problem.  I need some advice on whether I should try this
myself or have a television repair man do it for me.  I should have all the
tools I would need.  If not at home I would for sure have it at work.  If
anyone knows how I could learn to fix this problem please let me know.  Or
if it is simple enough to just explain through an email I would really
appriciate it.  Or, if I shouldn't even try please let me know that too.
Thanks alot.

Shawn

rca/ge (thompson) are the same co. They make a kit called an "s"kit . It comes
with solder and a temp plate you lay on top to show the areas that need to be
soldered. Also you need a 150 watt solder gun/iron to remove
the sheild .Thompson made the sheild out of 3 different materials ,you can try
removing it with a 35-40 watt iron but if no go it will  need more heat.

Some do's and dont's when working on these sets.
Don't : Overheat the circuit board near any surface mount components. They will
crack if they get too hot.
Do: use a good soldering station with a temperature controlled tip and good
quality 2% silver based solder, it flows better.  Removing old solder with
solder-wick allows a better connection as well.

Don't: pry down on the circuit board while removing the bottom tuner shield.
It is very easy to cut a small trace or break a component under the shield.
Do: remove all solder holding the can down and remove by gently lifting on the
shield on each of the four corners.

Do: Add additional solid #24 wire to bypass the outside grounds for when they
crack again.
Do: add additional solid wire to the can in each of the center post holes to
allow less of a gap between the board and the post.
Do: resolder the ground to the horizontal output transistor heatsink.  If it
cracks it arcs and corrupts the eeprom.

Do: when you are finished resoldering, very carefully inspect for any solder
splashes or bridges.  There are several very close surface mount parts that are
very close to the edge can.  If unsure, remove the solder and double check.

Good luck.
