Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

My son has an ACER 3683 notebook which was accidently damaged and broke the screen. Although it is still in the extended warranty period, the way the damage occurred, would not qualify for repair under any warranty. My question is is it economical to repair the item and if so how much would it cost. CHAS HOEPPER (nochas@iprimus.com .au)

As the graphics controller/card is either integrated into the Motherboard or stacked on it, the case has to come apart to replace the screen. You can check online auctions or other outlets for replacement screens or non functioning laptops like yours for the parts you need. You didn't mention whether the screen housing was damaged or any other damage to the case, if there is the laptop with a bad mobo or hd for parts would be the cheaper option. But you must also be able to or have someone who can preform the labor for you as it's not for first timers, otherwise I would look to replace the laptop and part yours out. JMHO

Acer z3751 has mother board problems especially when the operating system is being updated. So far Acer service only replaces its mother board when there is a complaint of auto shut down and of having difficulty in starting the systems. I would advise not to replace the mother board if there is such a problem after warranty period and if possible try to extend the warranty period as long as possible to minimise the cost of repairing.

I have a few suggestions for you regarding this scenario.
First of all, if the unit is in good working order currently, you don't really have a warranty claim. With your factory warranty expiring soon, I totally understand your concerns once the warranty runs out. Typically, they will do the absolute cheapest method to "fix' (like using refurbished parts, using 2nd quality new parts) the PC to get you outside your warranty period. Then they will happily offer you repair options that make a new PC look pretty appealing.
There are a couple of media options for severe cases of negelct, two of which are in magazines I subscribe to. If you send your explanation of events to them, frequently they are able to shame/leverage/embarrass their customer support into helping you.
The 1st on is Action Editor (actioneditor@smartcomputing.com
The 2nd is the Watchdog (watchdog@maximumpc.com
If none of these options work, you might protect yourself with an extended warranty. While I don't buy warranties on everything, I think you should try to protect yourself once the factory warranty runs out.
While Acer certainly has warranties for sale, there are other options, like SquareTrade (squaretrade.com) which are independent of the manufacturer, and are usually significantly less expensive. While I am not sure how long after your purchase you can still buy a squaretrade warranty, I would recommend them over the manufacturer option.
If none of these options appeal to you, you may decide to just chalk this up to a lemon, use it as long as you can, then replace it. I don't personally recommend Acer, but this is a matter of opinion, and I think individual product lines (from many companies) are more indicative of quality than choosing based on a brand name.

Hi, welcome to FixYa.

Most likely your factory backup in your notebook is damaged, that's way the restoration process failed. If your notebook is still in warranty, I suggest you to bring it to nearest Acer Service Center, ask them to replace the recovery partition you have in your notebook.

I have a laptop and both my usb port broke, my laptop is under warranty its a 5732z acer aspire. i want to know if the warranty cover it

In almost every case, NO. They'll consider it User Damage.
It depends on your warranty though and if you opted for a full-coverage plan that covers accidental damage.
If you bought it with American Express or some other Credit Card you might have insurance.
Hope this info helps!

Hello..

since you have done not mis used the laptop in anyway to damage it and it is registered and under warranty,my best advice for you is to take it to the nearest Acer outlet as soon as possible and go with your warranty card so you can get another one.,

My screen on my labtop broke and its app white. my dog dropped it and i do not no if anything is wrong with the rest of it is there any way i can find out before i pay to fix the screen? it is my hp labtop

Connect an external monitor to the VGA port, look to see if there is a key to toggle between internal lcd and external monitor, on my lap top it is <FN><F5>, on my Dell it is <FN><F8>

if the display is normal then the problem could be the ribbon cable connector, the inverter, or the LCD. If the external display is bad also the the problem is the video card or if embedded, the mother board is bad.
