My lens wont work.

I turn the camera on and the lens comes out but then right away it closes and it says lens error. It's not like i dropped it or hit it or put it in water, so i don't know what to do. How can i fix it?

When I turn the camera on, the lens comes out and then retracts, the screen says "lens error" and then it shuts off. I have tried new batteries and taking out the memory card and tried all the settings on the selector dial on top.

The camera is defective. Call 800 730 6597 and if it is still in warranty, we will send you a form to fill out and have you return the defective camera and then ship you a new one.

SOURCE: dropped camera now lens wont close. It says lens

Hi,
Remove the batteries and insert new batteries . Sometimes this may work but in your case the lens is stuck inside, or it will have been damaged . Nothing can be done other than taking to service center to get it repaired .

Hope this helps .

I turn on my camara and then the lens makes a noise and it turns of right away,i charge the battery (fully) and it still turns off

maybe because you have a lens error trouble, Lens errors (system errors) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:wish you luck thanks

I think you would be further ahead by replacing the lens, the corrections for lens errors works best on small camera's and it is risky. The only thing you can try is gently extend the lens manually and power up at the same time in an attempt to align the guides in the lens housing at the maxium extension, if it works the lens will retract when the camera is turned off. The other possible solution is, extend the lens and sharply hit around the lens housing with the palm of your hand and hit power at the same time, "very risky" but this might be enough to knock it back in position, but please note this can make it worse.

LENS ERROR

You are basically right. Its basically as easy to replace as it costs to repair, unfortunately those are your options. You could inquire as to an estimate to make your decision easier, or locate an independent repair shop as they may be cheaper. The camera would need to be taken apart and I only recommend that if you know what your doing.
Thanks,
Lee

This is probably THE single most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
