Hobart A 200 Mixer - Lube

Hi,
I have an older Hobart 20 QT A200 that I would like to lube. Where do I add the lube and how much, and what type can I use? Do I need to completely wipe all the older grease off? I bought it 8 years ago and didn't use it more than a few times to check it out, but it did leak some yellow lube back then.

It hasn't been used in 8 years and did have some rust develop while it sat in storage, I am sanding it down and repainting it. The bowl lift was rusted in place along the bowl lift slideways, I took the back piece off each slideway and there was a thin material between them that was all broken apart, is that really necessary or can I put it back together without that? Is there something I can substitute for that material, it seemed to be an asbestos type washer about 1/32 thick?

Any other places I should lube or oil it, or places I should check for rusted parts after letting it sit this long? The motor starts and purrs like a kitten, all speeds work fine. The bowl lift now works fine after freeing the slideways, I did have to spray a penetrating lube along the rod that attaches to the bowl lift handle inside the " neck ".

Any help or suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated, I just don't have the money to pay to have this fixed up for me, so I have to try and do what I can on it myself.

The Hobart tech told me to use a synthetic grease, NGLI grade 2, from the auto parts store for the gear case. He recommended black or green instead of red (red breaks down faster than the other colors). You need to use a food grade grease, NGLI 2 for the planetary. I bought the food grease - Mobilgrease FM221 off of Ebay.

There is an amazing video on Youtube on tearing down the gear housing on an A200. Watch it before taking it apart. Also, take lots of photos as it comes apart. Getting it back together isn't easy.

    The other thing to know is don't overtighten the nut on the shaft connecting the tranny to the planetary as well as the planetary nut itself. You should just tighten them until they barely snug. Too tight and you'll get a klunk every revolution of the planetary on speeds 2 and 3.

Hey steve,im a service tech for hobart and work on these units alot.You would need to take the transmission cover off in order to replace the grease,you would also have to drop the planetry to grease as well.If there are no issues with the mixer i would leave it be,but if you need some questions answered let me know.

How can i tell the which size my mixer is?


A 200 means 20 quart. I assume you have no bowl or else you can just measure the volume of the bowl.

I hAVE A HOBART 200T FIRST AND THIRD GEAR WORK FINE BUT SECOND GEAR DOES NOT SEEM TO GRAB WITH ANY TORQUE. WHAT MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM?


I would say without looking at it a key is sheared or gear teeth are worn on the gear.usually its a sheared key,however if the mixer is older they use a dive key assembly which you would have to replace the shaft.I'm a hobart tech and repair these mixers often,any ? let me know.What is the ml # on the data plate?

I have oil coming from the front of a hobart a200 mixer,What to look for? and what kind of oil?


If you have oil leaking from the attachment hub, the transmission grease has liquified. The transmission will need to be opened so the old lubricant can be removed, by scooping it out. There aren't any seals in the attachment hub, just two torrington needle bearings. The helical gears thrust the pinion gear onto a thrust bearing in the hub to create a seal. The hub has a return hole in it's casting for excess lube to return internally. It's possible the return hole is restricted. On the other hand, if the machine has been filled with oil, it will probably leak like a siv.
The new lube should be 35 OZ of mobil XPH 222,
Hobart part number is 103881-47 for 32OZ.

Hobart no longer manufactures the A200 mixer - but you can review and download a user manual and a parts catalog from the Resource Center on your mixer. That should help you understand the parts need.

operators manuals are available on the hobart service website, it will tell you to lube the side rails twice a year and other operator level maintenance.

Hobart 20 QT. mixer (HL 200) will not operate on a GFCI receptacle.


you need to replace the gfci,the older gfci's interpret these frequencies as a shock hazard and shut off power to the circuit.you can buy @hobart, part#913053, that should solve the trip problem. dont forget to vote thanks monomoy
