Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

5 Answers

Light blinking I just tried to open My Book and it won't respond. The WD icon is gone from my taskbar. When I try to use the shortcut icon it tells me, "Network connection that the shortcut refers to is unavailable. Make sure disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available." The light on the front of the external drive is going off and on, almost like it is on standby but I can't do anything with it. HELP!!

I'm having the same problem as lu73. I clicked on the My Book shortcut icon and it says "The drive or network connection the the shortcut 'My Book (E).link' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again." I'm a photographer and need my client's images A.S.A.P.!!!

hi, i have the same problem, but i just bought it and i haven't even had the chance to use it yet. I can't even look at anything on it and there is no image of it on my computer. Its as if i had plugged nothing in, and the power off and back on fix doesn't even work for me.

My mybook office edition is also blinking. It happened after it froze and I pulled the power cable.

Hey, i just had the problem but i had given up on solving it, so i had left it blinking for a while. After a little bit, a window popped up saying "Driver Software and Updates have been successfully installed and device is ready to use." Maybe the blinking light just means that its looking for updates or driver software or something. Try leaving it blinking with your computer on overnight (with internet connection of course), or something of the sort. Worked for me. Hope this helps.

The best solution for this problem is not using Western Digital and beware of other brand such as Calvary, that use WD drives inside. Probably the best bet is using interior drive that you can see 1st and buy exterior container and install yourself. I keep HD movies on 20 drives and WD has been a nightmare

My WD caviar green keeps blinking and won't show up in any way on my windows pc or macbook pro

Your WD has probably gone belly up. If you can't get it to register on either computer and you've tried different computers then it has croaked.

Were you able to use it in the past on the windows computer and the mac? If so, that's strange because they are two different formats and most times when you plug the drive into one or the other it will want to reformat it to be able to access it.

Hi there, I'm using a WD drive with a Macintosh. It accidently became unplugged, or partially so, when my young son brushed up against the plug. Since then it won't mount and there white light on...

Ouch. The blinking light is bad. But try this:

1. Run the WD discover tool
2. Go to "configure" and acknowledge there is a blinking light. This might give you access to the data and drives.
3. If the status says "good" then everything is fine. If not, then you probably have a bad drive and need to contact WD tech support. Hopefully you still have a warranty for it if this is the case.

Let me know if this works!

I plug in my WD external hard drive, i hear the chime saying the computer knows i plugged something in, but i see no icon to click on to open it. HELP! i have soooooo much information on this thing!

- try plug in a normal usb port (usb2)

- try open up the device manager, look for your WD and delete it.
then unplug and plug back.

try goto control panels->administrative tools->computer management->disk management
and see if your wd appears there. if yes, try change the drive letter assignment.

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!

My folder's turned into 1 KB Shortcuts on my 500 GB WD Hard Drive, it seems like memory in my HD is used, but when i click in to open folder it says that file cannot find :(

Well, it's obviously your external WD drive infected with virus which stop you from accessing the data by turning them into shortcuts (such as 1KB or 2KB). This blog article how to fix folder become shortcuts should help you out. Follow the step by step please. Note: do not attempt to format the drive before you try.

I can open my WD external hard drive, but after I get in there and am looking at pictures, it freezes up on me and says not responding.

Try this go to my computer. Right click on your removable. Go to properties tools error checking :mark both boxes and hit start. This will check file system errors and try to recover bad sectors. It will also tell you if the drive is failing.
Hope this helps.

The adapter to my Western Digital Book does not respond

The monitor requires a adapter with a current output of 4 amps. but the Western Digital Book adapter can only supply 2 amps (half the current required by the monitor).
This means using the WD adapter on the monitor will stress this adapter beyond its capacity and continual use of this adapter on the monitor will cause it to fail and/or switch off if it has overload protection.
If you are having problems with the 2 amp adapter on the WD Book, then the power adapter could be faulty or it maybe OK when the adapter cools down.
I suggest you get a 12 volt 4 or more amps adapter for the monitor.
You may need an adapter for the WB book too if the adapter is faulty.

How do I get started???

Hi firewolf708,

You’re going to love your WD 750! The way WD set up your drive is like a spare hard drive. To access it you will click on My Computer, and you'll see your C:\\(local Drive) and your WD 750 might be called X:\\(My Book) . (X = new letter of drive possible E: or F: and so on) All you have to do is click on that My Book drive and you have one very large folder to start copying and pasting into. It's just that simple. A good plan for navigating to it on a continuous method is, when your are at the My Computer screen that shows you both your C:\\ drive and your X:\\ drive right click the X:\\ drive and mouse over Create a Shortcut. Once the system creates the shortcut you receive a message that it can't create a shortcut in that area, but it can create one and send it to your desktop. You want to click on yes, and when you go back to your desktop, you'll find a easy icon that you can click to access that drive with a few clicks.

Have Fun!
