Position your printer. If you have a laser printer, allow a few inches of space on all sides for ventilation. Ink-jet printers don't require ventilation.
Buy a bidirectional, IEEE 1284-compliant parallel printer cable. (Printers rarely come with cables. See "How to Buy a Printer Cable," under Related eHows, for more information.)
Shut down the computer, but leave it plugged into the surge suppressor.
Compare the connectors at the opposite ends of the cable.
Attach the 25-pin end of the cable to the parallel, or printer, port on the computer. (The plug will go in only one way.)
Tighten the hand screws securely.
Connect the other end of the cable into the printer's socket.
Latch the retaining clips (on most printer ports).
Plug the power cord into the printer and into the surge suppressor.
Turn on the printer.
Install cartridges according to the printer manufacturer's instructions.
Turn on the computer.
Install printer driver software according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Add the printer to the list of printers your computer recognizes On a Macintosh, just select the new printer in the Chooser.
Plug the printer into power from wall. Turn it on. Then Connect the USB cable first into the printer and then into the USB port of your computer. Now install the drivers for the printer. The drivers can be found either on the disk that came with your printer or on www.hp.com
Follow these steps :
1.1 Position your printer. If you have a laser printer, allow a few inches of space on all sides for ventilation. Ink-jet printers don't require ventilation.
2.2 Buy a bidirectional, IEEE 1284-compliant parallel printer cable. (Printers rarely come with cables. See "How to Buy a Printer Cable," under Related eHows, for more information.)
3.3 Shut down the computer, but leave it plugged into the surge suppressor.
4.4 Compare the connectors at the opposite ends of the cable.
5.5 Attach the 25-pin end of the cable to the parallel, or printer, port on the computer. (The plug will go in only one way.)
6.6 Tighten the hand screws securely.
7.7 Connect the other end of the cable into the printer's socket.
8.8 Latch the retaining clips (on most printer ports).
9.9 Plug the power cord into the printer and into the surge suppressor.
10.10 Turn on the printer.
11.11 Install cartridges according to the printer manufacturer's instructions.
12.12 Turn on the computer.
13.13 Install printer driver software according to the manufacturer's instructions.
14.14 Add the printer to the list of printers your computer recognizes (see "How to Add a Printer," under Related eHows). On a Macintosh, just select the new printer in the Chooser.
Download the proper drivers from hp.com - DON"T use standard Windows drivers.
When you have the proper drivers installed, you will find an "Advanced" tab in your "Printing Preferences" where you can set "Ink Volume" and "Dry Time".
Try using less ink and a longer dry time.
Also, make sure you're using photopaper that is designed for "INK JET PRINTERS".
(Laser Jet paper won't work).
Any photo that you print on glossy/semi-gloss paper will be wet as it emerges from the printer (especially ones requiring lots of ink).
You could manualy "catch" each one and set aside to dry, which should only take a minute or two.
Professional printers use a special drying powder and timed spray rig when printing on coated cover stock and glossy materials.
