It sounds like the hard drive is toast.

The first rule of thumb.....backup backup backup. If you don't have a backup and it is that important to you, you can send your hard drive to a data recovery center that will be able to recover most of your data, usually by taking it apart platter by platter in a 100% dust free clean room. These services are very expensive but if it is your career.

Go to the MAXTOR web site and download their free diagnostic utility. Then, remove the hard drive from the external case and connect it to a spare connector internally inside your desktop. Run the diagnostic utility and it will tell you if the drive is still OK (it probably is). If so, you will only need to replace the interface card in your external drive.

Maxtor 3200 external hd not working

I would attempt to connect the drive after the system has booted up. If the external drive is found and accessible copy the data to another drive. If the external refuses to be recognized, allow the drive to cool completely 2-3 hrs, place the unit in a freezer for 2-3 hrs and then try the procedure again. Often times when the drive units or platters within the HD begin to fail you get symptoms as you have described. Super cooling the drive sometimes allows you to remove the data. If not and the data contained within the drive is valuable to you there are software solutions as well as companies that specialize in the data recovery field.

Maxtor 3100 installation

It's Plug N Play. XP will see it (Found new hardware), and will install the drivers for you and assign it a drive letter and you will see it in MY Computer. However, there may be some other features and drive options you might like on the disk.
I have anexternal USB harddrive myself and am planning on gettng another very soon.

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Maxtor one touch III 300GB making clicking sound and wont mount

You aren't going to like my answer but unfortunately the truth stings sometimes. Your hard drive has failed. The actual hardware mechanisms have failed. The clicking noise you are describing is the death rattle and is usually "stiction". When you hear that sound you can pretty much hang it up. If this is critical data the first thing you want to do is turn it off and let a professional recover it. Each subsequent attempt at retrieving the data lessens the chance you will be able to. Many people try to skimp and take it to the cheapest place only to have them irrecoverably damage it. I have seen and used some radical recovery techniques over the years that may resuscitate it long enough for you to move the data over if you are willing to take the risks. Different techniques include: Freeze it then try and mount it, heat it with a hair dryer then try and mount it, drop it from 4 or 5 feet onto concrete (or bang it with a hammer) and then try and mount it. Steam up a closed door bathroom (works as a poor man's substitute to a clean room facility) and swap the platters with another working drive of same model.
I used to think all drive brands were pretty much equal in reliability, after having 5 Maxtor drives fail within 12 months of purchase in one of the departments at work, I began paying attention and I can say unequivocally in my personal experience this brand is completely unreliable. I administer over 125 machines and when one has drive failure in it, I already know before I pull the cover what kind of drive is going to be in there. I stopped buying this brand 3 years ago and will never buy them again, they are now owned by Seagate which oddly makes the best drives but the acquisition didn't seem to help Maxtor's failure rates. Lacie uses Maxtor in their products so I won't touch them either, had 3 separate Lacie Terabyte Externals fail within 12 months of purchase and when I opened them up, of course they were Maxtor.
I have high regards (and long term reliability) for the other manufacturers... Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, Fujitsu, IBM, etc...

Maxtor 3200 usb personal storage

Like many others, I had problems with the drive and tried some obvious solutions like swapping the old USB cable with a new one, trying different computers with XP, Vista, etc. and nothing worked. One solution I found was to open the HD case and swap the drive into a spare bay on your PC tower. I didn't want to go there since the case is very hard to open and I didn't want the hassle. So, the solution I tried was to replace the power supply. I saw this solution a few times in some forums so I figured to give it a try. I Googled the exact specs and found a comparable power supply at 12V Adapters (Aurora CO). It is not a Maxtor supply but I figured as long as the output was correct it may work. Just got the adapter today, plugged in the HD, and YES, IT POWERS UP and the XP at my work recognizes the drive! Now I have all my files available and accessible. Good luck to all, I hope this works for you. By the way, one lesson learned: BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP! Drives are so cheap now there is no reason not to (except for being lazy)!

Windows repeats 'new hardware found' when I attch my maxstor One touch II

The reason is simple, your Maxtor drive "does not" support Windows-ME. Since Windows-ME is not supported by your Maxtor drive the drivers dont get resolved and will never get installed. FYI - Windows-ME is almost 10 years old. What makes you think Maxtor will support Windows-ME?
