I have a HP Photosmart printer which periodically fails to receive signal to print from MAC pc via wireless router. I have tried switching off and on etc and usually this fixes. The network test display states Radio on PASS but Radio working FAIL.

Thanks for your response, but doesn't seem to have helped!

The printer is in the same room as the router and I've even tried placing them just two feet apart.

I am concerned by the Test Report, which states "Radio Working FAIL". The printer, HP Photosmart C6180, is only c 4 years old. I've been told radios can sometimes fail and can't really be fixed economically. Do you think the above symptoms, namely problems over last 6 months gradually getting worse, with my continuously having to restart printer/ Router/ pc to make printer function and now failed completely, could imply radio failure?

This could be a couple of issues. One is the wifi part of your router is the actual problem or the printer has a wifi issue or is going into a sleep mode.

If you are not seeing any other problems from other wifi devices then your router should be fine. It is still possible that it is the very early stages of failing. These start with data errors and then progress to disconnects and finally stops working. Usual starts about 12-18 months old.

The same problem can happen with the device. It can start to have problems with connections or will loose the connection. Normally though the cause will be a poor signal which can be from the device or just it being too far away or having metal in between it and the router. Try moving the printer as close as you can to the router. If it improves or stops then it was a signal strength. If it works and then gets worse then the problem is the printer.

The third issue can be if the printer has a sleep mode. This powers down the printer that wakes up when you print to it. When you restart it then you reset the time and the printer is wide awake. Once in a while it can also be the power supply in the printer that mimics this. It overheats and shuts down.

What you need to do is a process of elimination. Try moving the printer checking the other devices etc The idea is to eliminate what isn't the problem. When you know the guilty culprit then you can replace it.

Usually when I've seen this it is the router but check everything else.

Printing jobs go to the cloud but will not print. Have had this problem for over a year

Setup the printer for wireless printing. Then the devices you want to use with that printer need to have printing programs on them. For a windows or MAC PC, most of the time the software is on the disk that came with the printer. For most phones and tablets you need to download the appropriate app from the App Store and install is, before you try to print wireless. Make sure the devices you want to use to print, are close enoug for the printer, so it can receive the wireless signal.

I think there are 6 ways (at least?) to connect this printer:
(1) Direct to Mac (or PC) via USB Cable (2) Direct to Mac (or PC) via Ethernet Crossover Cable(3) Ethernet to router/switch, with Mac/PC also via Ethernet to router/switch(4) Ethernet to router/switch, with Mac/PC via WiFi (802.11 wireless)(5) WiFi to router, with Mac/PC via Ethernet to router/switch(6) WiFi to router, with Mac/PC also via WiFi.
As (1) should be simplest, tried this first. First document would print instantly and completely, next doc would hang in queue with unexpected msg, "Printer is offline." Only way to print 2nd doc was to power cycle (off-on) the printer. This problem occurred whether 2nd doc was sent to printer before or after 1st doc had printed. Tried 2nd USB cable, tried new driver, tried reinstalling printer; same problem. Spoke to both Samsung and Apple support, including both on a conference call; never got this to work and never clarified if problem was in printer hardware/software, driver, or something else. Both companies now showing this issue as unresolved.
Nothwithstanding USB problem, did succeed in modes (4) and (6), although custom wireless config needed since my network does not broadcast SSID and requires an encryption password. Procedure required connecting first via Ethernet, obtaining Configuration Report by holding down orange button for 5 seconds, then using browser to connect to the printer's IP address. Also required different driver for wireless config (as opposed to USB).
Bottom line: What seemed simple - USB direct connect - proved unworkable, but wired and wireless network config works fine.

Printer won't go wireless

You should have received a CD with the installation software. This will guide you through the process of setting it up as a wireless printer. Make sure it is near to the wireless router when you set it up to ensure a good signal.
The wireless function only works via a wireless router, not directly from a PC with wireless capability.
