Printer won`t print in at all if one colour has ran out, can the printer be switched to Black ONLY to print a document. Thank you

The printer requires both cartridges to have ink before the printer will initialize and operational. Even if you are only printing black and white both cartridge have to contain ink or the printer will error out. This is standard on all ink jet printers from every manufacturer. You will have to get ink before you can print.

Problem is with carriage unit.

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Classic View
Click Printers
Select your printer
Right-mouse click on the icon
Click Properties
Set the printer to print in "colour", not just "black".

Yes, it is true that most of Color printers will not allow you to print document if one or more of the recommended Cartridge of the printer is empty or removed from the printer. for printing only black, the better option will be to change your printer settings while printing a document. ex: when on a document ,and your press Ctrl+P for document printing, there is a option where you can select print color as black and the printer will print your document in Black only.

The printer you have got is a monochrome printer i.e. it can only print in black. If you require colored outputs you would require to go in for colored printer.

No you need functioning colour cart for black to work.

Go into Printer properties and select the option to print colors as black/gray

This has been just happening with me aswell - I just changed the colour cartridge with the black cartridge ran out but i kept it in as it told me to place one in. Trying to print out but black ink wont come - just blank pages - surely the colour cartridge can make black? However, if you have the colour cartridge and are on microsoft word or similar, change the colour of the writing to dark navy and it will print out documents.

sure..but you need to set that in the settings of the documents printing under default(use greyscale).
