Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Fan runs, shuts down on cool

My Dometic rooftop unit runs with the thermostat on Fan only, but when switched to cool the compressor kicks in for a few seconds then shuts down. When this happens the "low power" light flashes on the thermostat. Would this be a problem with the unit or an electrical issue? Thanks.

Sounds like a power supply problem. There is enough power to run the fan but when you turn it to cool the current draw by the compressor drops the voltage. The lower power light is telling you the answer to your problem.

Sounds like the thermostat, the way to verify is to unplug indoor unit, remove thermostat, take pic of wiring with phone or label the wires as to the terminals. Carefully twist the yellow,(Y) Red (R) and the green (G) together. Plug the furnace back in, if the unit operates normally, replace the thermostat. I am basing this on the fact that the blower speed is changing. This could also be an anomaly within the circuit board in the furnace section, not likely though as the outside unit (condenser) is not controlled n by the indoor board unless this is a heat pump. hope this helps. THE OUTSIDE FAN MOTOR MIGHT NOT BE WORKING CAUSING THE COMPRESSOR TO GET HOT AND TRIP THE INTERNAL OVERLOAD IN THE COMPRESSOR - IF THE UNIT IS LOW IN FREON SAME RESULTS - WHEN UNIT IS FIRST TURNED ON DOES IT BLOW COLD AIR OR DOES THE AIR NOR FEEL COOL - JUST COOL AIR COULD BE LOW FREON - COLD THEN WARMS UP IS FAN PROBLEM

Bad run capacitor or bad compressor. If you hear an occasional click from the compressor try a new run cap and then a hard start kit. Otherwise it's more economical to purchase a new unit.

Please describe your controls. Does it not have low fan, high fan, low cool, high cool on the dial at ceiling? If yes, low cool or high cool setting should shut it down when temperature is reached via thermostat dial.

I have my dometic Rooftop ac unit. The heatstrip/fan run perfectly but when I turn on the ac...the fan runs good but when the compressor kicks on it just hums.

The compressor coming on does make a slight "humming" sound which is normal. Is the unit cooling properly? Do you think it is louder than before?
