Replaced Fan motor and capacitor

I just replaced fan mortor and capacitor. Fan first came on strong, then slowed down. I told my wife maybe the newer motors work like this. Well the compressor wouldn't come on. Now compressor comes on, and fan doesnt' . This is a brand new fan? Is there something else I need to look at? I've checked connections as best I can, all breakers, and disconnect, and all seem to be right.

Thanks Dan, you were right on. Fan was defective. I went through hell to return though, since a friend that is a certified contractor had put it in his company name, and subsequently went and told the distributor that I had tried to install myself thus voidng my warranty and ability to get replaced, or refunded. And by the way, not only was fan defective, but it was the incorrect size. What was suppose to be a 1/3HP, was a 1/5HP, so would have been too small even had it worked.

Well thanks for the info, and again, was right on the money.

    Take care,

Could be a shorted output rectifier (diode). This would cause a lot of current pull, and therefore voltage drop (fan slowing down). The electrolytic capacitors are for dc voltage, and will blow with wrong polarity, which means ac voltage would be the wrong polarity half the time.

Do you think it could be the fan capasitor?

if even after changing the capacitor the fan does not run on its own , so it indicates the weak fan motor .but before that check whether the bearings are chocked up ,sometimes even choked bearings cause this type of problem.

for any further queries feel free to ask.
thanks

There is probably only 1 wire leading to the F or FAN terminal on the capacitor. You remove the 1 wire to the fan side of the capacitor and connect it to the new fan capacitor. Then you take an extra wire that you will need to make, buy, or find, and connect it from the opposite terminal on your new capacitor. Meaning the other side that of the capacitor. Then connect that new wire from the new capacitor back to the old capacitors C or COM terminal. Clear as mud I know, but basically you run your fan capacitor wire to the new capacitor, then the other side of the capacitor runs back to common on the old capacitor. And beware! Those things can hold a charge!!! Disconnect all power & discharge the capacitor! Hope this helps

Rudd air conditioner outside fan won't start

I just had the same problem. I replaced the motor with no luck. It turned out to be a bad capacitor. If it is a dual capacitor, three prongs on top, it also starts the compressor. It is recommended to replace the capacitor anytime you replace a motor. I would try replacing the capacitor first. It is a lot cheaper that a new motor. If that does not fix the problem then you can get a motor. No harm, no foul. The slow start of the motor is a common symptom of a bad capacitor. The motor is not getting enough voltage. The capacitor increases the voltage like a transformer. It will boost it to almost 400 volts, depending on your unit.

If you have replaced the run capacitor and the fan still is running slow you definitley need to replace the motor no doubt. you can go online to Grainger.com or find one by your house. Your compressor is going off immediately because high pressure thats a good thing. Get a new fan and a new capacitor and you should be good.

Looking for fan condenser relay for buick 1996

When you turn on your A/C does the compressor come on? Unless you have a heat pump or you have a newer A/C that has a control board in it you won't have a fan relay. The fan is powered by the contactor, when it is energized the fan and compressor will both come on. If the compressor comes on and the fan motor doesn't. Disconnect all the power. Try spinning the fan blade,if it spins freely the bearings are ok, if it doesn't stiff or drags even a little, then the bearings are bad and the motor needs replaced. Then check the capacitor, if it has a bulge or is swollen then the capacitor is bad and needs replaced. You sometimes can take it to your parts store and some of them will check it for you. Last with the power back on and the unit calling for cooling check the volts to the motor terminals if you have 230 volts and the capacitor is good, then the motor is bad and needs replaced, if you don't then you need to check the fuses at the disconnect or breaker.

Why does a table fan slow down after some time?

Revolving blades in table fans pushes out air towards the front by creating a vacuum at the back of the induction motor. Other than providing air flow, the gush of air also cools the motor. Over time, esp if used in a polluted surrounding, dust collects inside the motor and causes friction in the shaft. If left for a prolonged period, this friction causes heat eventually drying up the lubrication, causing breakdown in the motor amature windings and also a leaky starting capacitor, thus slowing down rotation and also a complete failure.

2. Fans must be regularly taken apart, cleaned and lubricated. It is fairly easy if you are willing to learn. My India made Usha brand table fan is 48 years old and is still running smooth - just changed the start capacitor last year and my National ceiling fans are more than 35 years old.

3. In fact all moving parts in any equipment must be periodically taken apart, cleaned free of dust and grime and freshly lubricated. It will outrun your lifetime and serve the next few generations.

Just replace compressor keep tripping circuit breaker

Shut the power off to the unit, spin the fan blade to see if it spins freely. If it doesn't spin freely, (there appears to be a little drag when you spin it),the bearings are bad, if it does spin freely, then try moving the motor shaft from side to side if there’s any play in the shaft side to side then the bearings are worn and motor needs replaced. Then, check the capacitor, if it’s bulging even slightly, the capacitor is bad and needs replaced. Most of the time people replace the capacitor if motor seems ok. If capacitor is ok, turn power on to see if the motor is getting the proper voltage, if it is and not trying to run, then the windings are probably open, the motor's bad and needs replaced.
The fan motor could have been your problem all the time, because if the fan doesn't come on or runs slow, it causes high head pressure,
which causes high amps, which could trip your breakers.

if the motor seems like its getting extremely hot it could possibly be seezing up. i would suggest taking your volate reading for the motor and check for proper voltage, also check you amp draw on the motor. the proper amp draw should be on the name plat of the motor. any below the proper amp draw, replace the motor.
