Disable the device from the BIOS. Reboot and run a registry cleaner - use a good one like Easeus. Download - as in Save, not Run - the latest version directly from Realtek. Physically disconnect your pc from the internet (shutdown the wireless or unplug the LAN cable/USB modem , shutdown you security soft, reboot and enable the device from BIOS. Try installing now using the downloaded installer.
I had the same problem with everything installed,icons on the screen etc...I took my stuff to my computer wizard and he came with the following solution which is:
Make sure that you have a Windows XP "SP2 or GREATER" this is the kicker.Go to the requirements sheet if you need more info.
Anyway I did that upgrade from SP1 to SP2 and it works like a charm with pristine sound.

Try company that made the sound card
http://www.zzounds.com/item--EMU8803 look there they may have a solution apparently there is a partition going around asking them (the Company) to revert back to the old standard of the card?
try to reset the inputs on your sound card ,CLICK ON the PATCHMIX ICON, GO TO OPEN SESSION (IT IS THE FOLDER ICON IN THE MIDDLE ON THE TOP OF THE PAGE) AND TRY TO OPEN SNOTHER SESSION, IF THIS WORKS YOU ARE GOOD .YOU MIGHT HAVE TO OPEN A FEW SESSIONS BUT IT WORKED FOR ME
