Computer not recognizing camera

When I plug my camera into the computer, the camera and the computer do not recognize that they are plugged in together. Its been a while since I used the camera, but I think the screen is supposed to change when it is plugged in, not still be in "photo-taking mode". It happened on both of my computers. I am hoping it is the cord and not the camera, Any ideas?
