PS3 not reading discs

Many of you know the horrors that fall on the older generations of the ps3 20/40/60gs, mostly it is an issue with the blue ray drive where discs cannot be read.
Signs of this are as follows the game cd icon doesn't appear in the game list when one is inserted, or if a disc is in the tray the spinning icon in the top right corner continues to "scan" for the disc. These are signs of either a bad drive and needs to be replaced or the disc drive tray is misaligned, but fear not sometimes the smallest fix does the job.
I have the original 60g ps3 about half a year after my warrenty expired my blue ray drive decided to not read any form of disc be it dvd/cd/bd so i called sony they sent the coffin and i sent it back and when it arrived they had replaced the tray and parts of the drive to function again, so far so good discs reading again yay...not for long.
About a month later it happened again i was angered thinking that i just paid 180 to fix it i didnt want to spend that money again so i found a solution that seemed to work and hasn't had any problems as of yet..(knock on wood) but this being about 1 yr later im happy. Basically i figured it could be a bad sector of my hdd that is preventing my drive from reading anything so i reformatted my system and then voila! reads discs again so instead of calling sony right away try and reformat the system to its factory settings may be a pain for some and ok for others that have a large enough usb stick or drive to back up to but it saves you the cash in the end hope this helped anyone with this problem

PS3 Optical Drive Failure.

Have you had your Ps3 drive tell you its just will not read?

Here are some major causes:

1. Dirty drive.
2. Motor not spinning the disc fast enough.
3. Bad optical laser.

Step 1

Listen for the drive does it spin up?
Listen for the read head.
Put a audio disc in does it play?

If a audio disc plays but not dvd, blueray, or game disc you got a bad laser.

I recommend you do the following:

1. Make sure you match up you serial number on your unit.
2. Purchase the whole kit not just the laser.

The kit looks like this:

ae2a243.jpgThe cost of these drives are from $50 to $120 respectively. I do not suggest Ebay I would suggest a Store that sales these with warranty intact. Do not get fouled by ebay scams.

My game keeps freezing up

The obvious is, to check the surface of the game disc and look for scratches, dirt, or fingerprints as these inhibit the ability of the laser to read the disc. Another thing could be, the tracks for the laser inside your PS3 are slightly misaligned and are binding the laser mechanism. Its more likely the game is just a bit dirty. Clean it with a kit or soft terry cloth.

PS3 READING DVD'S + CD'S BUT NOT GAMES WHATS UP ?

Hello,

To start the laser reads disc's differently. A CD or DVD is just your typical disc then you have blueray which your games are burned onto a blueray disc. Your optical lens is damaged and likely unable to read blueray format.

If you have a blueray movie or can borrow one, try it and see if it still plays that will determine if that is the problem.

If so you will have to replace the optical lens,

Note: Opening your PS3 will void your warranty, so if you are still covered, it is best to send it in to Sony for repair.

Good news is it is easy to do and there are many free step by step tutorials with pictures or videos to show you how. If you must do it yourself.

PS3 stop reading disks? heres how to fix it.

So your shiney black pearl stopped reading discs huh? Now you are wondering if you can fix it because A)You are out of warranty and don't wanna pay almost 200 bucks to have it fixed or B) You are under warranty but don't wanna be without your PS3 for almost a month or longer .... Maybe you casn fix it on your own, if the problem is simple enough.

Sometimes the PS3 won't read discs simply because the lens is dirty, to find out if thats the case insert a game or blu-ray disc ... take careful note of the disc's 'label' as you put it in ... once it doesn't read after 10-15 seconds eject it ... if the disc's label hasn't moved your blu-ray drive's 'motor' is broken. Best bet is to send back to Sony and pay em. Or take the PS3 apart and try to replace the whole blu-ray drive.

If you remove the disc and notice it has moved your lens is probably dirty. This you 'can' fix yourself. First give the PS3 a GOOD cleaning. Vacuum it, blast it with a can of compressed air, vacuum again. Try disc.

Didn't work? Try a lens cleaner kit.

Didn't work? Time to get your hands dirty ... open the PS3 up (at your own risk) and clean the laser manually with pure alcohol and a q-tip. (video tutorials are on youtube.com)

Disc read errors are our main problem. It isn't some full blown epidemic but IS becoming worse by the day. My reasoning for this problem is simple: The PS3 is a dust MAGNET. I'm betting 90% of the disc read errors are cause by dust and dirt and pet hair getting in the machine and making the lens dirty or causing actual failure of the drive motor itself.

I love the PS3 and wish it didn't fail for anyone, especially this month with great titles almost here, but it happens. Happened to me on April 1st and I found out my blu-ray drive motor failed. A dirty lens I woulda fixed on my own. We really need a good blu-ray cleaner kit to come on the market in all major retail stores.

Peace PS3 fans.

Sony ps3 won't load,start,read disc

Clean with Compressed Air

One way to clean your PS3's internal laser is to use a can of compressed air. This is highly pressurized air contained in a can with a thin nozzle on the end. It is designed to get dust and dirt out of small spaces. Cans of compressed air can be purchased at any major electronics retailer, such as Best Buy or Radio Shack. Point the can's nozzle toward the PS3's disc tray and lightly spray for a few seconds to remove loose dust from the lens.

Use a Laser Lens Cleaner Kit

Also available are laser lens cleaning kits that work with the PlayStation 3. These kits contain a disc that is inserted in the PS3 the same way you would a video game or movie. The difference is that there is no data on the disc; it is designed specifically to spin in such a way that it gently cleans that PS3's laser lens, removing all dust, dirt and smudges in the process. These kits will also work on DVD, Blu-Ray and computer disc drives, in addition to the PS3.

Maintain the Discs

One way to make sure your PS3 laser stays clean is to keep track of the discs themselves. Examine a disc before you put it into your PS3's disc tray. If there is any dust or dirt use a dry, soft cloth to gently remove them before play. Dust and dirt are easily transmitted to the PS3's laser lens as the disc spins around at high speeds in the tray. By keeping the discs clean, you can make sure you don't have to go out and spend extra money on cleaning your PS3 laser lens in the first place.

Well its jut my ps3 wont turn in disks and there is nothing in it and it sais there is and i dont now what to do i looked on loads of sites and nothing is working

You most likely have a damaged blu-ray laser assembly!

Does the disc drive open and close? If it does then its the laser assembly for sure.

The laser assembly is only part of the disc drive, so it is less expensive to replace that piece other than the whole disc drive.

Either Order the Laser Assembly and repair it at home, or send the PS3 to Sony for repairs.

"Replacing the Laser at Home can be a difficult process, and I would recommend you read the section of the PS3 repair guide that is directly related to replacing the laser."

You can get the Sony PS3 Repair Manual for Free! Just click here to jump to the site.

My ps3 is not even registering that there is a disc n the system

Make sure the disc is clean and scratch free. Also, give the laser a clean using a laser cleaning disc. If that doesn't work, you will need to contact Sony for a replacement or get it repaired.
