Installing xp freezes

Ok... i have a barebones kit... i had an asus motherboard however i thought it was defective returned for another but i am still having the same problem.. so here is my problem... windows xp freezes and can only boot into safe mode (not able to boot to safe mode w/networking either) each time i attempt to do a clean install i am able to load all the drivers except for 2 pci driver which i cannot find or recognize so i disabled it .. and still same issue... also during installation i press F6 to load my sata hard drive floppy either says the file is currupt or cant find it on my floppy,, i down loaded it to floppy and i do have the installation disk but safe mode wont let the cd auto install the drivers (since its in safe mode.) when all the drivers are installed i see that there are no errors they are all working properly.. but still freezes i tested different hds and they all have the same symptoms of freezing after install so i really hope it is not the processor.. i need help... what would the problem be???? i am able to access some files through cd rom in safe mode but can only go so far w/cd since safe mode wont let me run the full installation.. .. but i have no clue on what i need from the installation cd.

the OS is windows XP home edition

i have installed these hardware

motherboard - msi k9n6gm am2 socket (switched w/ASUS mobo same issue so mobo is tested ok )
amd athalon 64 X2 4400+
crucial ram DDR2 533MHz (i have 2 each were individually tested ok)
cd-rw
sata 80 GB ata hd ( i also attempted swap a different IDE hard drive had the same problem so the hd is tested ok )

i did update all the drivers i could think of ... there is one driver conflicting with another (irq11 system managment pci -) unknown device .. im looking for the right hardware or driver.. ive been on the mobo manuafactures website, driver cd and even xp website (however i cant find anything that could help me figure out what the conflict could be) any clues?

ok..update,, i download pc wizard from another pc but i cannot install it into this pc since im in safe mode..im thinking maybe it doesnt detect the hardware since i dont have an updated service pack?? . i also thought of installing xp service pack 1 but i need to find the components for sp1 windows doesnt have a list or its jumbled with other service pack ( like 2 and 3) so i have no idea which ones i need. since its a clean install i dont know if i can install the service pack since i cannot activate windows because im in safe mode,, another option i have is downloading my cpu chipset but i need sp1 to do it.. i think the unknown device is REALTEK audio driver or media driver but i have no idea what file to upload as far as drivers go,, the manufacture cd only goes so far,but doesnt provide the driver unless i go thru setup which i cannot do in safe mode... its like im stuck between a rock and a hardplace

If it will only boot in safe mode it means you have a driver conflict.
This is only a suggestion but try fresh reinstalling windows, with only basic xp drivers then install other drivers one at a time rebooting each time you do until you come across the faulty one. remove it or check its for xp not vista research net for correct one

There are 7 non-metallic small washers in my m2n68 barebones kit. when I install the motherboard to the chassis, do I use these washers with the mounting screws? if not what are they for?

Probably red on one side? Like paper almost?
These simply provide a buffer between the screws and the circuit board to prevent pressure cracks when over tightening the screws. Some people use them on drive mounting screws to lower vibration noise.

Cheers!

I bought a barebones kit that has this motherboard. When I power it on, the system trys to turn on for about 5 seconds then the whole system shuts down. I called Asus support, they had me remove the cpu...

This could be a cmos battery or you need a bios update.
You will possibly need to call the manufacturer or go to the site and see if there is a bios update.
The cmos battery possibly needs to be replaced if this doesn't work then you will need to get a new board. This board is defective and if this is your second board then go to another manufacturer.

Windows 7 freeze after few minutes... please help vista freeze after few minutes

Could be a hardware related issue. I would check for bulging or leaking capacitors on the Motherboard.

63f8e67.jpg
If all capacitors seem to have flat tops (the "X" is not raised or leaking), Then I would try new RAM - Memory Modules as they can cause freezing if defective. Download and install MemTest to see if you have any defective modules http://www.memtest86.com/download.html.

If RAM is OK, then you could have a defective hard Drive. Try testing a different Hard Drive or run SpinRite http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm to test and repair your Drive.

ASUS M3N78-VM motherboard Problemes

Good Motherboard...BTW... Reset BIOS to Factory defaults. Make sure you have the latest BIOS as well. Then you need to eliminate the other devices. Try running just on the On-Board Video...see if crashes. Run w 2 Gig Ram...same same... and of course the processor which may be impossible. Once you know it is MB or CPU... you make a choice which to buy or test. MB first... you can always return with less stress.

install this program
http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_150.zip

it will give you your motherboard version

once you have that version number, go to your motherboard manufacturer's site and download the software for your motherboard.

install that software, restart your computer and you should be all set.

RAM MEMORY WONT INSTALL/DOES NOT WORK

It sounds like the RAM you ordered is defective.
I would put the your old ram in and verify that the system boots and operates properly. If it does, then I would send the RAM in for replacement.

I hope this helps,

Thanks for using FixYa,
