Static while using

My fiance and I have the same headset and we have no problem using it with EVERYONE else on the planet except each other. When we try to connect he gets static, I hear him just fine, he can barely hear me. We've tried it while moving and while standing still and he still has trouble. His phone is a Samsung t429 and mine is a Nokia 5300. Does anyone know if this is particular to the headset or either phone?
