My shower drain was running slow during a shower, and when i stepped out i realized that the toilet was leaking from the bottom -screw under cap on left side. i am at a loss and do not even know where to start. i put a bottle of draino in each hole and the shower water went down fine, the toilet water is going down but very slow and when i plunge it poors from the bottom. the clog does not seem to be in the toilet but somewhere past.. in the floor, in a main drain..? what would eat whatever is down there? where could the problem be? should water be able to come up from underneath?

thanks for both comments.. we are at a complete loss now -we tried three bottles of draino (before the first comment) and then baking soda and vinigar and salt and boiling water... we have had three plumbing companies come out and the city to blow their line. the toilet has been taken off and two rings were put on.. the pipes were snaked all the way to the street and no problems were found, the pipes? were snaked from the roof and from the main out front. nothing nothing nothing.. all is at a stand still including the toilet

You can try using rock salt and boiling hot water down your drains. That will help if you have roots getting into your line. Chemicals are not very good for your pipes. If you have PVC drains the chemicals can eat a hole in the pipe because most of them have acid in them. They are also bad for your health (breathing in fumes, getting on skin, etc.) If the line is broken down, has a break in it, it will need to be repaired.

Go outto wear the pipe runs out of the house and see if you notice the ground sinking or if the ground is staying moist, if not , take up the toilet, the bak of the tank first, sit it off in the tub to get it out of the way of work, and start by running snake down in the hole where th toilet sat, run the snake in and keep turning it till you hit the clog, if you hit the clogtry to bring it out, if not run it back as far as it will go, hope that works, then clean off the bottom of the toiletgood put a NEW wax ring on it, set the toilet back over the hole applying a little presure on the seat, put NEW flanges on both sides of toilet that bolts it to the floor and barley tighten it down, not to tight ( tiolet will crack ) put your tank and boot back on, reconnect your water line, turn on your valve and hope nothing leaks, as far as your tub draining slow, look undernthe house and see if there is any leaks in the drain lines area. If not open a pipe at a joint and run the snake in it and see if u feel anything in the drain line and back it out, if nothing there, run it in the other end. Till you find it

Clogged shower drain

Shower drains are all designed to be opened and cleaned, usually hair builds up, if there is a visible screw remove it and lift the drain cover, if you can get fingers under the cover try lifting it off to clean it. If its stiff and its made of plastic do not use metal tools to lift it. Instead pass a trouser belt under both sides and use this to pull it up, then clean it.

Sewage backs into the shower when the toilet is flushed

Obviously the drain line from your toilet to main drain out of the house ( used by upstairs ) has a blockage from your toilet line to "Y" in to main drain line. Depending on how it has been plumbed, there may be a clean-out between the 2 that can be used to remove the blockage. Your drain for shower is piped in to same line as toilet, thus when blocked at other end, overflows to shower. You can try some drain cleaner down shower drain if it will go. You might get lucky and release the blockage before plumber shows up .

Yes water can back up in a drain and flood out lowest opening, which would be a toilet flange at floor level.
If tub is draining fine, then clog is probably near the toilet, but below floor flange level, and therefore not inside the tank ... judging from your description.
If you are in a house, go outside and see if there is a vent stack on the roof directly above toilet. If so, you can run a snake down from there.
You can also run a snake down through "s" shaped toilet trap and enter the pipe that way.
Another option is to remove the toilet and run snake directly down hole, and then reattach toilet.

The plumbing under the slab floor has been roughed in wrong and without breaking up the floor and replaceing you cann adjust the floats in the pump pitr to come on earlier to avoid pit filling up as fast causing the waste to back up in the tub/ shower area.
