Makita 24V UM401D cordless lawn mower

I was given this mower, but have no manual and cannot get it to work. The battery is new, but does not seem to charge. Where can I acquire this manual/information? Thank you, Charlotte

I've got the same problem. I bought 2 new 12 volt batteries for the mower. When I charge the battery, the charger flashes a red light, indicating "recovery charging"...it doesn't want to switch out of this mode. I'm not sure what the problem might be. Do the batteries get hooked up negative to positive or positive to positive and negative to negative?

I just repaired my mower with similar characteristics. My fix was determined by compressing and releasing the power cord that goes into the mower just in back of, before, the strain relief. When I compressed and release this power cord, I got the green light to stay constant on the charging transformer, which tells me that the conductors somewhere in the power cord had been compromised. I suspected end closest to the mower side due to it's continually being plugged in and out (without very robust strain relief.

I was able to confirm this fact by cutting the power cord an inch in back of the power plug that goes into the mower and then restripping the wires (paying close attention to the polarity) and soldering the now properly connected powercord wires. I put heat shrink tubing on each leg, then shrunk the tubing in place, then wrapped the who shebang with electrical tape. and... viola!!! she worky! Charges like a champ.

Note: Another situation that arose at one point that gave a me similar flashing red light was when the was a small bit of debrin down in the mower power plug in recepticle. This debris kept the plug from seating all the way down into the plug recepticle and prevented the charge/power from reaching the connector.

Hope this help!

I am researching the same problem.
FYI is the relay is bad or the switch in the handle
then HOTWIRE the thing

Take the big White wire of the relay and put it in place of the Red on on the mower.

I have the same problem with my Makita mower (not accepting the charge, flashing red). I've been unable to find a replacement battery(ies) for a reasonable price and Makita is no longer manufacturing that model. The batteries should be hooked in series, i.e., postive to neg. so that the 12v output of each is doubled to the 24 volt rating of the mower. Good Luck but I'd also start thinking about getting a new mower for the spring.

Go to MAKITA.com and under the heading Factory and authorized service centers type in your model number and you should be able to download a manual. I had a couple of these when I worked for Makita and when running they are great. Good Luck. Dave

Why shoul dMountfild MJ66 need 4 batteries in2 months

Don't have access the mower engine info here based on the model number given.

You need to check the alternator output. It should producing 13.5 - 16 vdc for charging if your unit has voltage regulator. If doesn't have a voltage regulator it still needs to be producing 13.5 or more volts dc to recharge battery.

Tractor wont start unless I jump it

How old is the battery? When you get it started put a digital volt meter across the battery terminals and with the throttle about 1/2 open check the voltage. If should be over 13 volts DC if your charging system is working ok. If it is over 13 volts your battery has probably just given up. Lawn mower batteries are only good for 2-3 years. A trickle charger can extend the life if used.

I hope this helps.

Batt dead jump start does not seem to charge

Sounds like a dead or shorted cell battery. Charging system is probably working but is showing overcharge since it is trying to charge a brick. Replace the battery and all should be well.

I have a riding yard machine. It does not seem to

Sounds like the alternator under neath the flywheel has gone bad. This could happen from jumping the mower of a vehicle still running. The alternator on the vehicle puts out to much power for the mower and will damage or blow the alternator on the mower.

Will only start once after charging all night.

Make sure battery is not over heated (suggest bringing battery in home/room temp to cool down 1st) Clean contacts of battery ideally with alcohol swab or very slightly damp cloth, white calcium build up can cause poor connection clean wire clamps connected to battery also HAS TO BE BONE DRY Make sure you didn't flood gas driven mower. Simply give mower time to cool down Patience rules with problem solving/trouble shooting always explore easiest solutions first Spark plugs cleaned oil checked and filters cleaned also maybe simply too damp to function

Craftsman mower will start with pull but not with

When it turns over, is it somewhat sluggish (not as fast as before)? I would suspect your battery is weak, and the voltage drops so low that the engine does not spin fast enough to start. Also, without knowing what type mower this is (which model) it could be the voltage drops too low to generate spark (if equipped with an ignition module)

Whereby pull starting it, you aren't loading the voltage down with the starter, and the ignition module still works... So it starts.

Charge the battery per the owners manual. If that doesn't help, you may need a new battery, or you may have a bad connection between the battery and starter solenoid (heavy cables). If a connection has high resistance, it will drop more voltage at a given current.
