I restored the system from scratch using only Dell resource CDs. Everything works, except I cannot get the resolution over 640x480. It used to go to much higher originally. Tried downloading drivers etc. No luck. Any suggestions?

Re: Display Resolution on Dell Dimension 2300
Thats really low. are you sure you don't mean under. my computer doesn't go under 800x600. Max resolutin is 1280. Are you sure you're downloading the right monitor driver, because that hapened to me before, but it was because i had the wrong driver.Nothing is wrong with the monitor!!!!

You should start it with the DVD that came with it, containing the clean installation of operating system. Or, if there is recovery partition created, you can install it from there by pressin ctrl + F11 simultaniously when starting the computer.
You should have received recovery cds when yoou bought your desktop. One is for the XP installation and the second one is for the applications and drivers.
Just put the installation cd in and restart the desktop. You may have to hit a key when you see the message: boot from cd" on the screen.

If however you need to re-install windows with a normal windows disc, everything will be lost and you will need the drivers for your motherboard and other equipment.
If you are doing a factory restore/recovery then you will loose everything, but all your drivers and programs that where on your computer when new will be there.

login in vga mode and change vga resolution settings. For open vga mode restart your computer press "F8" button it shows some modes in that select vga mode and press enter. then change vga resolution in display properties> settings change to low resolution and restart your system
such a kind of problem occours due to a hardware device not getting detected at the time of installation. to fix this please ensure that the only devices that are connected to the system are the monitor, keyboard and mouse and then again reinitiate the reinstall\restore process. this time it should work sucessfully.
Dell didn't create a recovery partition on your computer back than, if that's what you're asking. My 2300 came with a Dell recovery cd. You might be able to get one from Dell.
Or you can create a slipstreamed sp3 installation cd if you need to reinstall the OS and you have the Windows discs. You can get the original driver files from the Dell website.
But why are you trying to restore it? Have you got some malware on the system, or what?
By pressing F8 at startup, you get the advanced startup options screen, which allows you to boot into last known good configuration.
If that doesn't work, you could try starting in safe mode, and then use the system restore command from Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore to restore the system back to a previous date when it was working.
