Question about Xerox Phaser 8500/DN Printer

1 Answer

Infrequent use of Xerox Phaser 8500

Hi, we only use our printer every now and again for colour prints as we have a black and white laser for our day to day printing needs.
Our local technician says we should keep the printer turned off when not in use as it will harm the printer to be turned on but not in use for extended periods of time.  However, when restarting the 8500 it always prints a cleaning page of solid colour which must use a lot of ink and our ink supplier told us that the printer will be fine left in sleep mode.
Obviously I'm inclined to believe the tech guy but I wanted to get another opinion.
Many thanks in advance

The reason he told you that is because ;
if left on permanently the fuser unit has a lamp ( nowadays the newer ones use a ceramic) the lamp continually comes on to keep the fuser warm and ready for you to print.which may cause the lamp to burn prematurely, most business keep theirs on all day with out the sleep mode( too busy to wait to warm up),

But, when you use the sleep mode most models do not turn on the lamp ( if it does it only puts out minimal power) but keep the power ready, which is why when you go to print it takes awhile to warm up.
The lamps are very resilient and last several years before having to change.

Is it possible that a print driver may have caused my printer to stop printing black

Try printing an internal print page like the configuration page. If the page is printed in black and white then there is a problem with the printer. If the page is printed in colour then the printer is fine and the problem is with the driver or the driver adjustments. The driver itself can not cause a permanent problem to the printer.

Even when all properties are set to 'black & white' our Phaser 8550 won't print without all ink colours LOADED. How do I bypass this need so we only need/use black ink?

Only loading black ink and printing monochrome only is not an option on this machine. It must have color cubes installed to keep printhead purged and operating normally.

Printer is printing the black color as light grey. Toner is already exchanged.

When you print something from a website and the print box comes up, click on preferences tab, and when it comes up click on color . Then click on print in grayscale and change the setting from High Quality to Black ink only, click apply at the bottom, then OK. It should print in black ink.

Try printing a light stripes test page (Troubleshooting, print quality problems, troubleshooting print quality page).
If you have loads of missing jets, run a couple of head cleans, if you see improvement, it is worth running some more, if not, try switching off overnight and rebooting next day. If it still won't clear, you may have a faulty printhead.
If you do not appear to have many missing jets but the colours are all just wrong it may be that the ink has gone stale. Run a couple of head cleans and you should see the colours start to improve. If it is getting better, all you can do is keep running head cleans until you have replenished all the ink in the printhead well.
Hope this helps.

The Xerox Phaser 6180N Laser Printer won't let me print only black if the other 3 colors are empty. Is there something wrong and is there a away to fix it?

These printers need to 'think' they have a full set of useable (ie not exhautsed) cartridges.

There are two solutions.

1 Obvious really - replace the 'empty' cartridges - good quality remanufactured ones are available these days.

2 Replace just the chips on the cartridges (much cheaper than replacing the cartridges. There may still be some toner in the cartridges, and the colours may print for a while, but this is really only either a stop gap solution, or OK if you ONLY need to print in black.
