Connecting harddrive and dvd rewriter

I have power 2 both devices, when the ide cable is unplugged, as soon as i plug it in nothing happens

    i lose power to hard drive, the same happens when i plug the ide lead into the dvd writer

    the cable end is black, it worked before ok, until the clips on my cpu fan broke off, had to use screws to connected back on. could this be causing the problem?

If you want to have two IDE drives in a single cable must set up as a teacher and the second as a slave.
the teacher is on one end of the cable and slave middle... but remember to set the pins as shown in the units

The ECS P6STP-FL motherboard uses IDE (PATA) harddrives, and optical drives. (CD/DVD drive)

IDE 1 is for the Harddrive.
IDE 1 is the 40-pin connector that is closest to the Ram Memory slots.
(Only 39-pin are used, however)

IDE 2 is used for the optical drive/s.
IDE 2 is next to IDE 1, and is further away from the Ram Memory slots.

The IDE connectors on the motherboard, have a Cut-Out on one side. A small square cut-out.
This is for the Locating Lug, on the flat IDE ribbon cable's, connector.
This makes sure that Pin 1 in the motherboard connector, is lined up with Wire 1 in the flat IDE ribbon cable.

The Locating Lug shown in this example, is two 'ridges' that are separated. Some designs just use one solid block.

IF, there is no Locating Lug;
Look for the faint Red stripe, on the side of the flat IDE ribbon cable,

This stripe denotes the side, that number 1 wire is on.
Motherboard installed in computer case, the red stripe on that flat IDE ribbon cable, goes DOWN.
Down towards the Bottom of the motherboard.

When connecting to the Harddrive, and there is no Locating Lug on flat IDE ribbon cable, the Red stripe goes towards the power cable connection.

This applies to the optical drive (CD/DVD drive), and Floppy Disk Drive.
(34-pins for a Floppy Disk Drive. Cable is smaller in width)

Now, there is a different method of connecting a Harddrive, or optical drive, in relation to the flat IDE ribbon cable.

Depends on if the flat IDE ribbon cable is a 40-wire cable, or an 80-wire cable. You can use Cable Select setting on Harddrive/Optical drive; OR you can just connect the Harddrive, or Optical drive the correct way,

Is the Harddrive recognized in BIOS Setup?

Example for one type of Western Digital harddrive;

Western Digital 80 GB harddrive, and IDE (PATA)

With this information I can find the Cylinders, Heads, and Sectors.
Then guide you in entering it in BIOS Setup, IF needed.

"Press DEL to run Setup"
Press the Delete key to enter BIOS Setup.

AS SOON AS you press the Power On button, start tapping on the DELete key.
Tap in 2 second intervals.
You will hear beeps. These are Stuck Key Error Code beeps, and it is YOU that is doing it. Ignore the beeps.

Best method for entering BIO Setup.
(The window of opportunity for entering BIOS Setup, goes by F-A-S-T! The above method will get you in)

You have described a 4-pin Peripheral power cable, ('P6'),

However, I do not know if the flat IDE ribbon cable marked Slave, goes to a secondary Harddrive, or an optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)

Either way the point is moot. BOTH of those 'squarish flat black' units, HAVE a 4-pin Peripheral power cable to them.
Another hardware component, those type of power wires CAN go to, is a computer case fan.

However not ALL power cables have to be used. Sometimes there are extra ones. These are in case they are need later.

To summarize;
The optical drive, or drives; that you put a CD, or DVD disk in; can use a 4-pin Peripheral power cable.
(IDE/PATA optical drive)

Harddrive's can use a 4-pin Peripheral power cable.
(IDE/PATA harddrive)

A computer case fan may use a 4-pin Peripheral power cable.

Or the 4-pin Peripheral power cable you see, may simply be an extra one. One if needed in the future.

Find socket for hard drive


HP part number 5188-5473 brings up the Asus A8N-LA motherboard, made especially for HP,

The rest of the number/letters do me no good.

I will elate some information based on the above, and see if it does you any good;

1) The Asus A8N-LA has connectors for two types of Harddrives;

A) IDE. Also known as PATA.

This type of Harddrive uses a flat ribbon IDE(PATA) data cable,

The connectors on each end have 40 socket holes. One socket hole will be blocked off. (Or should be) ONLY 39 socket holes are used.

Looking at the motherboard illustration, look at the Bottom/Right corner. There are two IDE connectors. They are marked as IDE 1, and IDE 2.

Scrolling down a little bit to the motherboard photo, you will see IDE 1 connector is Black in color, and IDE 2 is Blue in color.

The IDE (PATA) harddrive's data cable goes to IDE 1.
Optical drive/s (CD/DVD drive) goes to IDE 2.

This is the type of power cable from the Power Supply, that goes to an IDE (PATA) harddrive,

NOTE*
There is usually a square, or rectangle, or two bumps; used on the IDE ribbon cable connector, to line up with the connector on the motherboard, or harddrive, or optical drive.

It is called a Locating Lug.

This particular IDE data cable connector, has two raised bumps, for a Locating Lug.

It lines up with a Cutout in the motherboard's connector, or the harddrive's connector, or the optical drive's connector.

IF, there is NO Locating Lug, use the faint Red stripe on the side of the IDE data cable.
The red stripe is on the same side as Number 1 wire.

Number 1 wire goes to number 1 pin.
On a harddrive, or optical drive, number 1 pin is ALWAYS closest to the power cable connection,

Looking at the photo number 1 pin is on the Right side. It is closest to where the 4-pin Peripheral power cable plugs in.

B) SATA:

Looking at the motherboard photo, the Yellow, and Blue, and Black, and White connectors; to the left of the Blue IDE connector, and Black IDE connector; are SATA connectors.

SATA 1 is Black. This is where the SATA harddrive's data cable, is supposed to plug in.

The BEAUTY of SATA though, is that you can plug the harddrive into ANY of those SATA connectors on the motherboard, and BIOS will find the harddrive. (Or any other peripheral device)

The red SATA connector shown below the SATA cable example, is just a different style of SATA motherboard connector; than what your motherboard uses.

Note the L-shaped opening in the SATA data cable's connector.
Lines up with the L shape on the motherboard connector, or harddrive connector, or optical drive connector.

Most SATA data cable connectors, also have a Lock on them.
Sometimes it's a Lock you can easily see.

Most times, it is a small depression you depress with your thumbnail, or a little 'bulb' you depress.
Depress/unlock to plug the cable in, or remove the cable.

The 90 degree angle connector end, (As shown), plugs into the harddrive, or optical drive. The Straight connector end plugs into the motherboard.

This is an example of a SATA power cable,

Between it, and the SATA data cable connector, it is the larger of the two.
SATA power cable connector has 15-pins.
SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.

Also note the rectangular depression on the SATA power cable's connector. That is where you depress to unlock the connector.
The SATA power cable's connector also has an L-shaped opening.

2) IF, you are trying to hook up a laptop harddrive to this motherboard, you need to determine if the laptop harddrive is an IDE (PATA) type, or a SATA type.

How?
Easy.

There is a label on the laptop harddrive. It has the manufacturer code on it. Type the number/letters in your browser search bar, and click on the search icon. (Magnifying Glass)

Now purchase an external enclosure.

The external enclosure opens up, and the laptop harddrive goes inside, and plugs into an interface.

Close the external enclosure, and plug it's USB cable into any available, open USB port on your computer.

It will be a 2.5 external enclosure.
Harddrive's are measured across their width.

A desktop harddrive is 3.5 inches across in width.
A laptop harddive is 2.5.

How to add a second hard drive to a tower pc


I'll state basic information, and also more detailed info using an Asus M4A88TD motherboard;

The Asus M4A88TD-V EVO motherboard, with USB 3.0 technology, and an AMD AM3 processor socket,

Under the main view photo at the top left; there are 4 views shown underneath. Click on the third view from the Left. Shows a top view of the motherboard.

See the 5 blue SATA connectors under the Blue and Black ram memory slots? Red line points to them, and subheading states;

IF you are going to add a SATA harddrive as a Secondary harddrive, use one that is open. (Nothing plugged into it)

Which one? Does NOT matter.
The beauty of SATA is, that you can plug into any one of those SATA connectors, and BIOS will find the device that is plugged into it.

(SATA 1 connector is usually reserved for the Primary harddrive, though. The one with the Windows operating system on it.
[Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, etc )

This is a general example of a SATA power cable,

Note that it's connector is longer, than a SATA data cable's connector.
It has 15-pins.

Looking at the connector for the SATA data cable at the top, note the L-shaped opening.

Looking at the SATA connector for a motherboard, shown on the bottom, note the L-shape where the SATA data cable plugs in.

The SATA power cable has the same L-shaped opening.
Only plugs in one way.

Caution!
IF, the SATA harddrive you are going to use, has a provision for a SATA power cable, AND a 4-pin Peripheral power cable, ONLY use just a SATA power cable!

Why?
Because you will burn the SATA harddrive up! Maybe not right away, but I assure you down the road it will.

4-pin Peripheral power cable,

(Also know erroneously as a Molex power cable.
Molex was the first manufacturer of that type of power cable connector.
Name kind of stuck. Just like calling an adjustable open-end wrench, a Crescent wrench ),

A) Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:

B) Plug the SATA data cable into the motherboard. Bring the SATA harddrive closer to the computer case, and plug an unused SATA power cable into it.

Find a slot in the metal harddrive bay, that you can slide it into.
Install the screws in the side, if the harddrive bay is of this type.
Otherwise there will be plastic clips on the side of the slot.

That's it.
Close the computer case, plug the computer back into power.
WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.

That Asus motherboard also has one IDE connector. (IDE/PATA)

More than likely if there is a device plugged into it, it would be an optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)

I would Not plug an IDE harddrive, and an optical drive (CD/DVD drive), on that same flat ribbon IDE cable.

1) IDE {PATA} DVD burner drive:

For an IDE { PATA } DVD burner, connect to the 40-pin IDE header on the motherboard. This is located to the right side of the Ram Memory slots.
It is the longer header that has 40 contact pins. {39 actually}

( The shorter connector on the motherboard is for a Floppy Drive.
{34 pins} It is above the IDE 40-pin connector )

NOTE*
The IDE connector on the motherboard should be keyed. Should have a cutout on one side. This is so the Number 1 pin in the flat IDE ribbon cable, will line up with Number 1 pin in the motherboard connector.

Some flat IDE ribbon cables, do not have a Locating Lug on the connector. (Small rectangular 'bump')

Number 1 pin on the IDE ribbon cable will be on the side that has a faint RED stripe on it.

Number 1 pin in the motherboard connector is at the Bottom, with the motherboard installed.

The side of the flat ribbon IDE cable that has the faint red stripe on it, goes DOWN, when installed in the motherboard connector.

If the DVD drive does not have a cutout for it's circuit board, the faint red stripe of the flat ribbon IDE cable, goes towards the power cable connection.

2) SATA DVD burner drive:
You have 4 Serial ATA headers (Connectors) on the motherboard.
Your SATA harddrive should be plugged into the SATA1 header.

You can choose any open available SATA header, to plug your SATA DVD burner drive into.
BIOS will see it once you turn the computer on.

3) If you somehow have been using an IDE {PATA} harddrive, and have it connected to your IDE connector on the motherboard, you SHOULD not use a DVD drive on that flat IDE ribbon cable, also.

BIOS has to find which device has the Operating System on it, (Windows), and then hand the computer over to the Operating System.

To state again, BIOS will look at both devices connected to that flat ribbon cable. The Harddrive, and the DVD drive.
It will then determine that the Harddrive, is the device that has Windows on it, not the DVD drive.

This slows the computer down, and could result in a blue screen.

If you have an IDE harddrive plugged into the motherboard, it would be best to use a SATA DVD drive.

ASUS P5QC does not detect any devices... I have a HD and a DVD hooked up. The jumpers are set to normal but they are connected to the MB with one cable. Does it need to be a master slave setup?


Yes, since you are using two IDE drives on One flat ribbon cable, you need to set the harddrive as a Master drive, and the optical, (DVD), drive as a Slave drive.

When two IDE drives are installed on one cable, BIOS needs a way to find the drive that has the O/S, (Operating System), then the optical drive.

Would recommend you buy a SATA optical drive, as soon as you can afford it. SATA DVD burners aren't that expensive.
Your motherboard is set up for SATA, and SATA is WAY faster than IDE. (IDE is also referred to as EIDE, ATA, and PATA)

Then of course a SATA harddrive, and a fresh genuine copy of Windows in the future.
SATA doesn't care where you plug in a drive, and doesn't care which drive connects to what SATA header. It will find that drive. You can connect any SATA drive, to ANY SATA header on the motherboard.

Having two IDE drives such as an IDE harddrive, and an IDE optical drive on the same cable, S-L-O-W-S your computer down! BIOS has to look to see which drive has the O/S first, then it will look for the optical drive.

Hard Drive Installation


Hi emceedrive, I gather you are using ATA/PATA IDE hard disk drives? Each hard disk drive has a large white sticker on it. Listed there are pin settings to set the IDE to Master or slave & Master with a slave. (We want to leave you're drive with windows on it alone). Not changing its jumper or not adding a jumper for now. We are not hooking up you're second drive just yet either.
Oh, please you're not an idiot either.
Unplug the power cable from the PC & open you're case.
Please open you're ASUS P4P800 SE manual to section 2.2.3 Motherboard layout. We want to connect the data cable to SEC_IDE1 first because once PRI_IDE1 is connected you will not be able to connect SEC_IDE1's data cable up to the DVD drive bay.
So grab a data cable for you DVD drive. It may have three connectors on it. Plug the connector that is the furthest from the other 2 connectors on the cable into the motherboard slot named SEC_IDE2. The data cable only goes in one way. Run the remainder of the cable up to the DVD player but do not connect it to the player yet. It is ok to fold the data cable which will help in routing it upwards to the DVD bay. Than connect the data cable to you're primary master IDE drive. (The one with windows already installed on it). The data cable should look just like the DVD data cable. Again you want to connect the furthest connector on the data cable into the MB slot named PRI_IDE1.
For now it’s best not to install the drive into the drive bay. Stand it up next to your case or lay it down flat with a sheet of paper under it. Connect the power cable to the drive. Plug in the PC's power cord & power up the PC & start pressing the delete key every two seconds until the bios main menu loads. You should see the Primary Hard disk drive listed at the main menu. Now go to the title Boot in the bios. Open boot order. The boot order of the devices should be as follows.
Boot device 1. (Floppy Disk Drive)
Boot device 2. (DVD Disk Drive) [None shown it’s not connected to the system].
Boot device 3. (Model number of your Primary IDE Master HDD).
Once this is set, save the bios & exit. The system should auto restart & windows should load. Let windows finish loading. Than shut down windows normally.
Unplug the PC's power cord. Since you had to remove a DVD drive you'll need to set the remaining DVD player's jumper on the drive to a Master & connect the data cable & power cord to it. (You may have to remove the DVD to see where the Master pins are located. It will be marked on the DVD player near the pins).
Now take you're new drive, do not insert it into the drive bay. Look at you're Master drive's white label. Set the jumper on the master drive first. It should be set as a Master drive with a slave.
Connect a jumper for this.
Go to you're new drive. Again look at its white label. Set this drive's jumper as a Slave drive. The Master drive should be connected to the end of the data cable. The new slave drive should be connected to the next in line connector.
Once all data cables & power cables are connected plug in the PC's power cord & boot the system, again pressing the delete key every two seconds until the boot main menu loads. Now you should see the Primary IDE Master drive & you're new Primary IDE Slave drive listed. You should also see the DVD as the Secondary IDE Master. Go to the title "Boot" again. Set the boot order as mentioned above. Save & exit the bios. Windows should load as it did before. Once windows has finished loading open windows Explorer & see if you're new slave drive is listed.
Shut down the system & unplug the power cord. Unplug the slave drive & mount it into its drive bay. Take a black marker & mark the side of the drive as slave. Disconnect the Master drive & connect it into its drive bay. Reconnect the data cables & power cables. Check all connectors before closing the case up. Re-connect the PC's power cord & boot the system. Everything should be fine. If you have a problem getting the data cable connected to the slave drive because its closer to the DVD drive as opposed to the Primary IDE Master drive you can make the slave drive a Secondary IDE Master (Change its jumper setting according to the drive’s label for Master with a slave) & connect the DVD player as a Secondary IDE Slave. (Change its jumper to slave). Change the Primary IDE Master drive’s jumper as a Master with no slave, single drive. That all.

Bios doesn't recognise harddrive or dvd rewriter


sound like th cable is reverse.
read the manual first, make sure the momories are in the correct orientation. DO NOT FORCE IT.
un-plug the hard drive and the DVD. try to run on the computer. if it turn, then plug in one item at a time.

Since Intel manual doesn't tell you which is pin1 on the IDE cable. you nee to make sure the cable with red bend on one side is plug into the IDE socket on the motherboard label pin1 and the other end is plug into the IDE hard drive facing the power plug.
SATA cable can go in only one way.

Connection of two harddisk


One ide channel can have two devices, most pcs have two ide channels primary and secondary.

if You have 2 ide channels then you can install total of 4 ide drives into your pc.

if you have only one ide channel / connector on your motherboard then you can install only 2 ide drives into your pc.

your pc might also have sata slots for devices.
1 drive / connector.

Installing a drive is very simple.
open the pc case.

Locate a free ide cable, connect your harddrive to it and also attach the power cable. Thats it.
