Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to use the drive to your PS3 Console you can still do a Quick Format on the Hard Drive but make sure you select Fat32 File System type to be able for the Ps3 to detect the hard drive. Make sure you use Windows XP or Windows 7 on formatting the hard drive to Fat32 because Windows Vista dont have Fat32 it uses ExFat.

Thanks for using Fixya.

You need to format your drive as FAT32.
If you are using Windows Vista or 7, you will have to google search for a FAT23 formatting tool. So take your data off the drive. Format the drive, put your files back on the drive and your good to go.
*************CAUTION************
There is a 4GB per file size limitation with FAT32!

Want to use the drive with a mac and windows

To use this drive on both MAC and WIN, the drive needs a FAT32 file formatting system.

Before you continue, check to is if it isn't already FAT32 in which case you could already use it on both.

Windows doesn't allow you to revert to FAT32, if the drive has HFS+ (for MAC) or NTFS (WIN). The best option would be to format it on your MAC.

Double click on your MAC internal drive and select 'applications' > utilities > double click on disk utilities. On the left hand pane, highlight the drive to format. At the bottom of the screen, select 'options' and check MBR (master boot record) and then ok. Under the volume scheme, select current - You can then rename the drive, if you like and under format, select 'MS FAT' (the title of the option may vary a bit, but i'm sure when you see it, you'll know what I mean). Now select 'partition' and then 'partition' again.

Hope that helps and make sure you backup anything you wouldn't want to lose!

Iomega 500 gb hard drive: large file transfers

The default format for the IOMega drive is FAT32. This format will work on all versions of Windows, as well as Mac OS9 and above. Unfortunately, FAT32 can't handle files larger than 4gigs. If you want to use larger files, you're going to have to remove all the files from your IOMega drive and use your computer to format it to NTFS (Windows 2000/XP/Vista) or HFS+ (Mac OS9/X).

Consult your owner's manual for specific details.

Actually, the utility that the above commenter states would make you a fortune is called Disk Management and it is built into both Vista and Windows already. You are able to partition a hard drive to have both ntfs and fat32 partitions. There is also another freeware called swissknife. Also, there is an old hp program that is able to format external hard drives larger than 40gb into fat32 format which is an issue for some. So yes it is possible. I can tell you that from experience. I own a 1tb Iomega that I have a 40gb Fat32 partition for my Playstation 3 to read and the rest is NTFS for file transfer speed with my computer.
