When I try to back up my computer files for Windows Vista using a Toshiba 320GB capacity portable external hard drive I receive the message that I need a ntfs drive. Can my external drive be converted to NTFS to work with Windows Vista and if so, how is this done?

Whwhat the others have so far suggested are ways you can format the external Harddrv, Besides that if you want to convert the harddrv to NTFS( the Drive has to be an NTFS drive by default from manufacturer)
and If you are having trouble Backing up data Please use the software,"Preloaded NTI Shadow software "

If the external drive shows up in my computer, right click on it and click format. Follow the prompts to format to " NTFS "

or

Right click " my Computer " from desktop, click " Manage " On the left side click
" disk management"
Your external drive should be there. Right click on your external drive and choose " Format "

Check your hard drive usage and capacity in the system properties before investing in a new hard drive -- sometimes malware can trick you into deleting programs and files. If you are running Windows XP or Vista, open the Start menu and click on My Computer (Computer, if you're running Vista). Right click on the C: drive and select Properties. It will show you how much space your hard drive has, and how much is being used.

If you really do have very little space, try to move large files like movies and music to external storage such as DVDs. You can also run the Disk Cleanup utility to delete temporary files and empty caches.

Tip

How back up your files (data) before doing system restore

1. Use of pre-installed backup tools. Many computers have a backup software installed when you buy (including Time Machine backup and restore for Mac or Windows). These tools are designed to transfer files to various media they create on the computer hard drive or external hard drive, you can prevent a total loss of data is performed. When you open the utility, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the backup.

2. Back up important files on a USB stick or Memory Stick. Insert the stick into a USB port on your computer. Drag the selected files to the disk icon on the desktop (Mac) or PC (Windows) will appear. Flash drives and memory sticks are very mobile and can be stored in small spaces such as basements. Although they generally do not have a capacity of more than a few gigabytes (GB), they are large enough to store your important files.

3. Enter an external hard drive. These external hard drives usually have a very large capacity and can therefore keep most or all files on a disk. Connect the external hard drive via a USB port. You can drag and drop files on your hard disk or use it as a means of backup using a backup utility installed.

4. Burn your important files on a CD-R or DVD-R. an entire hard disk backup can be many slices, so this option is ideal if you want large media files or documents for easy access later. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM and follow the instructions on the screen (for Windows and Mac) to back up and store files.

5. Upload files for storage in the cloud. Services in the Internet cloud storage (like Mozy and drop-down box) are great ways to backup files to the internet access from any Internet enabled device. Important files with sensitive information may only be attached to a back-up cloud services such as Mozy. Clouds, Drop box is ideal for backing up photos, videos and other files less sensitive.
Dell dimension wont boot after power outage and stops half way through the boot page

Hello,

The problem is with the corrupted boot files .In my opinion you have one solution
Steps for solution

1. Download an operating system called ' Linux mint ' which can be installed in the pen drive having minimum 4 gb capacity . Using this operating system you can access the computer .

2. Copy the file and folders to an external storage device (external hard disk, pen drive etc..)

3. Reinstall the operating system ( XP,Vista ,Window 7,Ubuntu etc )

Hope you be successful

How do i get my computer to use my external hard drive which i just installed

Which Operating system are you currently using? By default XP/Vista/7 should have generic drivers sufficient for using the device as external storage, To Check and make sure the drive is being properly recognized simply double click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop if using windows XP. Or in Vista/Windows 7, click on the Start Button and then scroll over to Computer and Click. the hard drive should be listed in there. Take note of the drive letter . If you'd like to save items to it simply save to the new drive ( when within the program of your choice, Word, Windows Media Player etc ) by selecting the new drive in the "Save To" Window. ( Be Default most windows systems should store all information on the C:\ Drive ) your new external drive should be listed with a different letter ( F:\ G:\ etc )

I think it is your hard drive enclosure, and not the hard drive itself.

I would try a USB 2.0 IDE/SATA Serial ATA Hard Drive Adapter Cable Kit, I use mine all the time in repairs, this would be your best bet for getting information off your hard drive. http://insidecomputer.stores.yahoo.net/usb20toidsea.html

Another thing to try, is to take the hard drive out of its encloseure and install it as a second drive on your computer, and see if you can read it that way.
