1990 Lumina instrument panels are notorious for going out, your speed will register higher than what your really traveling, and your tach will eventually start acting crazy and go out all together, its expensive to replace, around $500 last time I checked a few years ago, so given the devaluation of your car as in the case of my Lumina, I purchased a $100 GPS thats tracks my speed by satellite, and it works like a charm, putting $500 into a car that is only worth $1200 is a hard pill to swallow, Hope this helps.

2006 buick lacrosse - speedometer stopped working properly

Sounds like you need to replace your speedometer cable that runs from your dash to your transmission.

Reads 40 TO 45 miles per hour but I know I am going faster and sometimes it will drop to 0 miles per hour.

A place in Flint Michigan will repair this problem (speedo motor) for 100.00 and will replace all the other motors associated with your dash instruments. Off of Hill Road Near I-75. Did my truck in 20 minutes. Works Great!!! Business called Speedometer Something.

Speedometer out of calibration by 20mph at 55mph.

It's a cable. If the car doesn't have the same size tires that it came with from the factory, the speedometer will be off. The only way to calibrate it would be to change the the cable drive gears in the transmission, but I have no idea what the gear ratio would be or where you would get the gears. That car came with either P215/75R14 or P205/75R15 tires.

Speedometer stuck at 20 miles an hour?

My 96 did the same thing. The speed sensor is and was fine -- the problem is an open circuit in the wires inside the gauge itself.

The Chilton's manual has pretty good instructions on how to replace the instrument cluster. You can buy just the speedometer gauge, or an entire instrument cluster for $100 or so on eBay. Just be sure you get a cluster that matches your model and trim line -- the LX and DX have different clusters, and of course the automatic and the 5-speed are different as well.

Do be sure to disconnect the battery before you begin the project, as there's a (slim) chance you can discharge the airbags if you don't

The speedo in my 95 mustang Gt Is 10 miles an hour fast

A vehicle speed sensor that is starting to fail could cause this, or less than likely bad wiring or connections, or yes, a bad cluster could do this... But how exactly did she notice the speedometer was 10MPH fast?? There are no real accurate speedometers in vehicles (Don't get me wrong they shouldn't be off by 10MPH) but there is a 5 or so percent difference high or low in many vehicles even with stock powertrains. I've plugged in with a diagnostic scanner on many vehicles and the dash speedo shows 60MPH, but the electronic speed readout on the scanner reads as low as 55MPH or as high as 65MPH

Speedometer Doesn't Work ..

Yes. You also want to check your alternator. Weird as it sounds our electronic dash on a Lincoln had us doing 55mph at a stop. It was the alternator and you may need to check your backup generator for clean power. There is some kind of electronic term regarding "Sine" waves, that apparently matters alot. Good Luck

Speedometer appears to register 15 miles less than actual speed

If you have replaced your stock size tires with oversize aftermarket tires and wheels (17 inch stock wheels to 22 inch wheels, etc) you need to have the computer reflashed to compensate for the larger tire size. Larger tires turn slower to maintain the same groundspeed, giving a false speed reading.

Speedometer is 5 mph off.

Most speedometers are off by a few miles per hour even when new, this is normal
but yours could be caused by putting different size tires on the car check the owners manual for correct size tires
