I will need the model number of your set to help you, sounds like the flyback or splitter is the problem. If you post the model number I should be able to help you determine whats wrong. Please respond to this same post when replying

Your red tube is going bad or the CRT board is cracked. Either way your TV is done. You cannot get replacement parts anymore.

My tv has a loud hissing sound from the rear.Sounds like an air leak. The stand by light flashes 5 times and the picture is all messed up.What can I check?

A suggestion here: Carefully remove back cover and plug set back in and turn on---DO NOT STICK YOUR HANDS INSIDE!---Try to locate where the sound is coming from---the 5 blinks is an error code--If model is correct as listed here I or you can GOOGLE the model number with "5 blinks" to see what that code means--clearly related to the hiss you hear.

My money would be a high voltage issue but correct model number needs to be confirmed.

Made hissing sound and went out

The hissing can be caused by the Flyback transformer of the HV block. Can you remove the rear cover and see if you can identify where the hissing sound is coming from?

Won't turn on hissing sound

glenphilip53,

Usually when you have a hissing sound, unit won't turn on, on a TV with high voltage, one of two things is happening. The first and most likely problem is the flyback had cracked and is bleeding high voltage to ground. Set will not turn on, you will hear hissing. The second possiblility is that one or more of the high voltage wires and/or connections has come loose and again the high voltage is leaking off. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4916851-diagnosing_repair_tv_high_voltage which explains the troubleshooting process, where to get the parts and how to install them.

Thanks for using FixYa and consider a great rating. Ratings are important as well as testimonials if you are happy with the information supplied.

Tv hisses and goes off

Whats the model number of your set and I will assist you as the hissing is most likely the flyback or the HV splitter. The model number will help me decide which. also let me know if the hissing is louder at the front of the set or louder at the rear.

GE 46GW948 shuts off when cold then works fine

This is a classis symptom of poor solder connections that when heated connect well. If you can solder, you should be able to fix this yourself. Resolder any connections that appear to be grainy or have rings. Note: The most likely location of these poor connections are at the convergence ICs. These are large black ICs attached to a heatsink and should be marked STKxxx. There are high voltages floating around inside these sets even when unplugged, so be careful.

Keep me posted.

Hitachi 46ux11kf/ keeps shutting off

Convergence amp maybe out. These are the big STK's on the video board that stands by a heatsink. THis set is bad for going out. You also can tell by checking L.E.D lights in back of set do they all come on or do some come on and go off?
