First time using infocus 1x projector with this laptop - installed drivers but there is no start up screen on the projector and will not display laptop image.

You have to tell the computer you hooked up an additional external monitor. Lower left on the keyboard you will see a "FN" key. Across the top, your F keys...look for an icon that looks like a monitor. Usually F5, F7 or F8. Hold down the FN key and select the F5 etc key which is the command to display the image through the external port. Doing this once displays image through the projector and laptop. Twice displays image to projector only and three times returns to display only on laptop again.

I can see my background but cannot see anything else

Hi,

The Fn+F8 in some laptops or Fn+ KEYS WHICH HAS MONITOR ICON OVER FUNCTION KEY) command tyically runs through 3 modes: Extend desktop, Laptop only, Projector only.

Mirroring displays (meaning you see the exact same thing on both screens) is not always on option on a PC; the ability to do that is dependent on the graphics card and drivers in the laptop.
Not seeing the exact same thing on both screens is often the preferred way, but when you don't see all your desktop icons it can be a bit confusing.

The trick here is that when you want something to show on the projector, you grab the window you're working with and drag it over to the other monitor. Why this is preferred is because you can be showing a powerpoint presentation on the projector, while you have a script or notes open in Word on your laptop display to read from. You see, you don't see anything but the desktop background on the projector because you haven't moved anything over there yet.

Your laptop is in extended mode, try changing to Laptop mode, should solve your problem or try dragging the required file to that monitor as said above

Half of monitor screen shows on the projector.

You will need to set your computer to the correct display properties.
This you can do by either going to presentation mode.
Alternatively,
on Window XP you can simply go on to your desktop and right click > go to properties>go to setting> press display 2 and set the screen resolution as per your projectors resolution and enjoy.
( for information: display1 is the resolution meant for your computer).

No picture

You may need to reduce the resolution on your comptuer screen. Try going to Control Panel, Display, and Settings and lowering the resolution a notch or two.
Also, you must make sure that the computer is set to send the signal to the external monitor,. That usually means holding down the Function key and pressing the F5 key or the one with the picture of two monitors on it. You will see several options for display. Toggle with the F5 key to the one that shows the computer screen and the external monitor at the same time.
