I have taken the hard drive from my laptop, a acer travell mate 2300 and I am trying to find a connection on it so I can access some of the information. Help

Connect your laptop's hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter then plug this adapter into the USB port of a working computer.
The computer will see this USB adapter/hard drive as an external storage device. You can then open the various folders and files on this hard disk and copy and or backup your data.

I getting error 'USB device has malfuntioned and Windows does not recognize it" when I attach my transcend storejet 25 mobile to the computer. I have critical data in it and need somehow to get the...

Hi, most external hard drives come with a seperate power supply, the exception is "pocket" externals which some have the ability to run from the USB socket alone. They have laptop drives in them. Many of these drives come with a USB cable that occupies 2 USB sockets in order to obtain enough ppower to run. (Or a second cable that occupies a second USB with a power plug on the end for a drive. They will often not run on one socket. If your device came with a double USB lead then use this. If it came with an external power supply then use it as well as the USB lead. Try the same on another PC just to confirm the USB sockets on the one you currently use are ok or try a different device to prove correct function.
If all this fails to get your drive running then the drive itself is probably faulty. Is it under guarantee? If so then you can get a replacement. This will lose your data though as the guarantee does not cover stored information. In this situation, is the data more important than the drive? If very important, buy a replacement empty external drive case, remove your drive from the original case (voiding the warranty) and fit the drive in the new case and try again. If it now works you have a dead interface board in the old case, if still not working you have a faulty hard drive. Does the drive click continouously? If it spins then you could try data recovery software or run "HDD regenerator 1.71" on it to fix potentially bad sectors and try again. This is a time consuming process but if the data you need is saved then it is worth it!

I hope this helps

Due to the nature of the problem you describe, it appears that you could be experiencing an issue with the hard drive and/or the external USB case. Below I have listed 2 possible solutions to help resolve your issue.
A. External USB Case 3rd-party Driver
USB cases (depending on manufacturer and/or OS) will sometimes require a device driver to be loaded before the device (in this case, an external hard drive) will function at its maximum potential. From Windows XP and on, this has not been the case as the OS will provide its own driver but if you are using an older OS, this maybe required. If the external case brought a driver CD, perhaps installing could shorten the time to access your data on the drive.
B. Hard Drive Corruption/Failing
When a hard drive has become corrupt or is failing, the device tends to become sluggish and overtime completely unresponsive. When this occurs, the best solution is to backup your data as soon as possible and replace the failing hard drive before it dies completely and you cannot retrieve your data.
This is a common scenario and unfortunately, due to the manufacturing process of hard drives, the inevitable end to all hard drives once they have met their end of life.
SSD (Solid State Drives) are hard drives that are not manufacturer using metal platters but rather flash memory (such as that of USB flash drives, digital camera memory and cellular phones). These drives feature no moving parts, hence their failure rate is extremely low. Also, their lifespan is typically rated for tens of years with some industrial products rated with lifetime warranties and are able to withstand drops, falls and extremely low/high temperatures.
The trade off on HDD vs SSD is the cost, with HDD prices hovering around $.30-.50 per GB while SSD prices (while falling) are still around $1-4 per GB.

I am not recognising kigston data traveller

When the flash memory USB hard drive device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash or USB hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy.
NOTE Formating the USB flash drive will delete your data.

USB's slow and external drive

For the USB ports, you may want to verify that the drivers for the "enhanced USB" are up to date and for USB 2.0 or 1.1. USB 2.0 ports are generally backwards compatible for 1.1 devices. The "enhanced" does indicate USB 2.0 controller. 30mins to backup 3GB to your external drive is a VERY long time. USB 2.0 transfers data up to 480mbps, but if you get an error message indicating that the device can perform faster on a 2.0 port, you maybe transferring data at 12mbps which is USB 1.1 speed

To speed up the transferring of data, identify which USB contoller in Device Manager is the USB port you're having a problem with, and delete it from Device Manager. Then, plug in your external drive into a USB port its never used before.

As for the naming of hard drives, Hitachi partners with several drive manufacturers including Dell and IBM.
