Question about Toshiba Satellite M45-S355 Notebook

Write speed problems with my DVD-R...PLEASE HELP!!!

I'm going crazy and can't get any answers anywhere. I need help because I'm stupid when it comes to this stuff. SOMEONE PLEASE!!! I have the Toshiba Satellite M45-S355 laptop. The problem I am having is with the DVD-RW drive. It is a DVD-RAM and multi-drive burner. It only burns DVD's(no matter if -R or +R) at 2x speed though it is SET and much capable to write at faster speeds. This also goes for burning audio CDs as well. It can burn up to 24x speed but it takes almost 45 minutes to burn one disc!!!!!

If this helps...it is a Mitshita DVD-RAM UJ-831S.

First...I don't understand what the check box in the drive's recording properties is asking "Enable CD recording on this drive"?????

Second...does anyone know what burning software works best for this burner????

Third...is it a DLA file I need, or firmware, or do I have to do something in Windows to fix this problem????

THANK YOU TO WHOEVER TAKES THE TIME TO READ THIS AND HELP. I NEED HELP PLEASE!!!

THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING TO MY POST. I APPRECIATE IT SO MUCH!!!

ok...I figured out the check box on my own. Though I don't understand why I need to switch between DVD-RAM and DVD-R/CD-R mode...and though I'm still kinda confused...I enabled the check box I was describing in the properties.

But now I ran into a new problem. I downloaded Nero 7 in hopes that it would fix the write speed problem and it only made things worse. Not only did it still write at 2x when writing audio/dvd/and data discs again...but it also installed a bunch of **** in my computer. With the Nero 7 installed it spiked my cpu usage to 100% for absolutely no reason...and it would stay like that!!! I'm not too happy with Nero 7, I've never had difficulties with their software but Nero 7 is full of bugs and problems I take it. So I went to uninstall N7 now and it wouldn't uninstall everything it put on my cpu!!!! UUGGHHH. Not only that...it also over-wrote any DivX codes with it's own...so when I uninstalled N7, now movies ripped on my cpu won't show a picture, only audio.

I don't know. I'm going crazy friend...LOL. I appreciate the help and time you've taken out of your day for me. But now I'm lost again.

So Nero 7 still burned slow, it did not fix my write speed. I tried other media brands and still have the write problem. I really don't know what to do. Nero Express from what I remamber was solid and didn't come with a load of extra stuff. But it's kinda old isn't it? How is Roxio...I've never used it. Originally my laptop came with Sonic...but it was a demo version and you had to purchase it for full function. I uninstalled Sonic because of that fact and also...it too wrote discs at slow speeds.

AND JUST FOR NOTE IF IT HELPS...MY BURNER AT ONE TIME DID WRITE AT FAST SPEEDS...I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S iTUNES OR OTHER SOFTWARE I'VE INSTALLED RECENTLY BUT SOMETHING MESSED UP MY BURNER. I INSTALL NERO 7...AND IT DIDN'T FIX...NOW I'M BACK AT SQUARE ONE AGAIN:(

Alright its time to fix tis...

First...I don't understand what the check box in the drive's recording properties is asking "Enable CD recording on this drive"?????
It is another Feature that is provided for your DVD burner harware device,(you will understand indepth once you come across some thing to use that feature on Your Own)

Second...does anyone know what burning software works best for this burner????
Nero is one of the Most commonly used Burners and there are Trial Versions available for Free for you to download and use it.
besides that you can try softwares like Roxio,SONIC and ay more...

Third...is it a DLA file I need, or firmware, or do I have to do something in Windows to fix this problem????
I dont think you will need any of those because the 24X is the Max speed for your DVD burner you can adjust the Burning speed by being able to Adjust the setting from you DVD software(which entirely Vary from Software to software)

This is not fixable, you have to replace the unit. The laser is broken.

Hi,
please go in bios check the drive is shown there.
if shown and not showing in my computer then might be the os issue.
Go to the device manager and check any yellow question mark on the dvd/cd rom drive and if not then try following
Right click and uninstall the drive.
Go to IDE ATAPI controllers in device manager and uninstall secondary controllers or ata channel 1 from there.
Go to run option>type regedit and enter then>H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CURRENT CONTROL SET>CONTROL>CLASS>first entry starting with the 4D36 and single click on entry>on the right hand pane check for any lower or upper filter and if there delete both.

Restart the system twice then check if then also not working might be OS or drive faulty

Thanks.
