Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have just got a new system with a Geforce 8600gt 1 gb video card and LGw2242t Monitor and the system keeps saying that directxdraw, 3d are not available which I need to run windows media player. I can only think it must be the settings on the monitor as I have definitely got the latest directx installed. I am running Vista.

Sounds like the drivers for the GeForce 8600gt Video Card needs to be reinstalled.

You don't disable it from there. Reenable it again and do it right: you uninstall its drivers from Programs and you reboot twice; you install the new card and you connect the monitor to it; when the pc starts you go directly in the BIOS and you disable the onboard card from there; you reboot one more time and you install the drivers for the new card.

Have you installed the proper monitor drivers as your main display? Also at Nvidia they have a large selection of new drivers for this. From what I have read, it only seems to happen with Windows 7. What operating system are you running, and also what Monitor do you have?

Want to know

Hi lokarpit,

I've got good news for you! Your Presario's motherboard only supports Supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards, and your GeForce 8600 GT is a PCI Express x16 graphics card.

However, I'm a bit concerned about the graphics card being 1gb? Both Nvidia's 8600GT and 8600GTS came out with only 256mb GDDR3 memory on them. Are you sure you have the right card?

But, if you have one with 1gb, the motherboard won't care, it's the graphics card that actually, will either work all 1gb, or only the 256mb if it's been changed.

Good Luck to you, and my answer is as long as it's a PCI Express X16 card, Yes, GO FOR IT!

Don't forget the leave a rating based on my solution.

Can asrock m266a support geforce 8600gt

Dear hiran89

Please see the specification of your motherboard at the following link of Asrock. It supports only up to AGP 4x.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=M266A

The 8600GT GPU does not come in AGP setups only PCI-Express. In general even if you were to have this card then the rest of your system would bottleneck the capabilities of the card.

My advice is to buy something more suited to the system you own such as a RADEON RX2600PRO, GEFORCE 7600GT,..but still these may be still more than the system deserves right now.

Saying this the most powerfull graphics card now in AGP are the ones below

GEFORCE 7900GS, 512MB DDR3
ATI HD 3850, 512MB GDDR3

Upgrading video card

Unless you are working with 3D models your gains in upgrading your VGA card is minimal as photoshop is knowns to be more dependent on the size of memory, speed of memory installed on your machines as well as the speed of the hard disk. The processing power of the CPU also can be an important factor than the graphic card.

However if you are set on going for a new graphic card, I would advise you that you get a new card such as the 8600GT or the ATI 3850 (Similar in price but faster than the 8600GT and 7600GT and uses the same or less amount of watts!, and also does not need a the 6pin connector for additional power).

Going back to your power issue, you have not stated your power supply's wattage or amperage, or if the power supply is generic or branded all which influence the decision to get a new power supply. However if you have a power supply that provides a true 300W you should be fine to run any of the cards stated above.

With regard to the bus issue, if you have a PCI-Express bus you should be fine in getting any of the new cards, but if you have AGP you will be more limited, though i know there are 7600GT (old stock) which are for the AGP slot, and only AMD (ATI) released there R2600 range for the AGP slot.

Hope the information is useful :)
