That is certainly an option. Be sure the screw you use is plated or stainless and not so long as to cause a dent in the other side.

A second idea is to get plastic wall anchors used for gypsum wall board and insert them into the holes in your sheet metal. You can then install screws that come with them to complete a repair. Metal ones will also work but you do have depth issues and there are installation problems you'll likely encounter.

Obviously, you can also remove the panel cover and use appropriate fasteners to complete the repair...but here's another idea:

There is an item made by a company called Harbor Freight which will install a SAE threaded sleeve (not metric) made of aluminum into sheet metal. It comes with various sizes of sleeve. It works like a pop rivet tool. Find it here:

GE dishwasher model GLD5868V15SS handle loose

This model comes with two types of doors. One with a single panel with integrated control on top or a two part door with control unit in front. The handle varies.

If you have a single door panel with handle bar across from right to left then you need to carefully unscrew the back panel screws and free up the front panel. the handle is screwed to the front panel from inside. Once you tighten carefully put the back door panel in and tighten. Take photos along the way to make sure you get back where you started. Also unplug dishwasher before working on it.

If you have a two part door with front control then handle and access to it is different. See diagram on this website for blow up of the panel and location of handle (part 713).
