If you are technically compitent, then its simple. Open the camera and remove the optical assembly. furthur carefully open the lense assembly apart. Remove the motor and the gear assembly so that you can move the barrels manually. carefully check for any friction in the movement. If its moving hard, take every barrel apart, clean them with some hard brush, refit the assembly. Now check the focus motor.normally fine sand or dust get accumulated on the grease at the shaft of the focus motor. clean it check for any damage the the flex ribbion cable of the lense assembly. If you can do all this carefully then reconnect the optic unit to the main board, fit it , switch it on and you will find it working.

Camera powered on, lenses extended, then got an E18 error message. Won't take pics, lenses won't retract. Tried charging battery, no difference. Powers up, powers off, that's it.

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend.

There is a step-by-step tutorial (with pictures) for fixing this yourself on this website, which is too long to re-post here.

You can also try tapping the USB port lightly against a hard surface, and using compressed air to blow out the area between the camera body and the lens turret.

If you can't fix it yourself and decide to send the camera back for repair, be warned that Canon has horrible customer support and response time. You might want to consider replacing the camera instead.

E18 error

Greetings sandrak2,

As frustrating as it might be, I would suggest directly returning to whatever repair shop you had it serviced by and demanding they redo the fix. It is not acceptable for a unit to be sent in for service and return not properly repaired. I would suggest doing this as soon as possible.

I hope this helps!

E18 ERROR SNAPPED RIBBON CABLE ON REPAIR ATTEMPT CAMERA WONT RUN NOW

Hello Dear,
You are requested to take the camera to the Canon Care Centre, but only if the Ribbon cable is removed from its locked it can be reinserted but if it is torn off, even after setting the zoom lense of your camera the Digital Zoom will not work and you will have to use the camera only with Optical Zoom.

E18 lens will not come out

E18 Error Fixed Canon PowerShot A520 My lense would not come out and would give me the E18 error and shut down.

I just pressed the power button on and held it down while extending the telescopic zoom lense. It made a horrible sound but the next thing I knew the lense extended out and the camera worked again!

After E18 fixes...lense got in..but does not come out

You can just head to darntoothysam.com and search for "E:18" without the quotes. You won't see your model listed, but you can buy any one of those model repairs and follow the steps to get your A510 fixed.

HELP!!!!!!!

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try:

E18 Message - Beeping.

The E18 error message relates to a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!

My lens wont fully extend

My sister's camera was having the same trouble and after trying a few different things, i came across a solution that fixed her camera. Her error said "lense error, restart camera."

I held down the shutter button for a few seconds, then i held down the power button as well. I tried it once or twice and then it worked. I hope this helps!
