Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Type of router.

I don't have the router for the situation I described. I am trying to set this up for my daughter at her apartment. I was going to buy a Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G router and a USB adaptor/receiver for the computer. Is this the right stuff? Let me thank you now for the tremendous help. I really appreciate it.

The router will be just fine. I'd suggest that if the PC is a desk top you get a wifi lan card rather than a USB one.. but that's just my personal preference.

The USB one is just a plug in so would certainly be easier to install.

BTW just so we are clear... she does have a modem already that is working?

Easy Peazy, Nice and Eazy,

Connect the ISP modem, that may be connect to your home computer right now, to the main input in the wireless router. Now connect the computer to any other port available with a second network cable. You just did the basic setup.

Now hold the tiny reset (with a pen) in till the unit cycles through. This will clear all custom / security settings, and leave like new. You now can connect any wireless devices. Just choose you SSID netwotk ID (user).

Security requires some administration via web admin, but this should get you going for now. GL

Ive been trying to connect to to the internet for me to set up my linksys WRT54GS router but ive been doing this for alamost a day now without getting what i want. i cant access

step one would be to open a command prompt and type: "ipconfig" (you should be hard wired to do this as most routers don't allow a wireless connection to manage them unless you selected it previously)
you will see things like::ethernet adapter and IP address then subnet mask.under that is the important one here and it is the default gateway as this number will be the actuall address of the router it is not always.???.???.???.1 as you describe or there manuals it can be diffrent
then if you still can't browse the gateway 's IP then try in the command prompt to type: ping "the gateways IP we just observed. this should respond and get you in. here is alink you must select the version to download the manual for the exact one you have

hope this helps

I forget my password

Check for the "reset" button on the back of your router. Push and hold that button for 10 seconds.
Please be aware that resetting the router will lead to the loss of all settings, included the broadband connection settings.

Router dropping connection to start with , I would cycle the power and it would go back to working. Now it's stopped all together getting online.

if your broadband provider has no issues, try to reset the router through the reset button at its back for about 10 seconds. do this with the router disconnected from the computer and power. after that, with the computer turned off, reconnect the router and set it up again if you need specific settings and test the connection. you may also need to try using another cable to connect the router to your modem.

Hi I have just installed a brand new Belkin wireless router and it works great with all computers and laptops in the family (including Apple products) apart from my daughters laptop...she has a toshiba...

Check the main computer you set up the network router may need to go to the network status and tasks in control on this...then you will see a map of all the network devices connected...find the belkin router and click on this window there should be a tab called wireless this...the wireless properties first page should have the wireless SSID name listed here...and if you click the security tab then the security type and network key are displayed here..You need to write down the SSID, security type, and network key and make sdure the toshiba laptop setting for the wireless network are exactly the same. There may be a link on the first page of the wireless securities saying copy to usb can use this to copy all network settings to and then transfer these settings in to the toshiba by using the network setup wizard.

My daughter is unable to connect to my broadband. I rang my provider, non UK, all he told was I gleened from our lengthy conversation that i need to change my forgotten password.

type the address he has given you into your internet address bar.
This will bring up the router settings page
Navigate to wireless settings and disable security for WPA and WEP
Navigate to security and change or delete the password

Save settings

See if your daughter can now connect wirelessly

Go back into the router as described above and set a new wireless WEP or WPA key
save / exit and check it works

Every time my daughter uses her laptop, my pc says

Either unplug the router from power source for 10 seconds and plug back in to reset.
Or you may have an ip address on the pc itself that is conflicting with your daughter's ip address. Dynamic ip address are set so they don't interfere with each other. We use 4 different pc's on one router in our home.
You can change the ip address of your computer by going to start menu, then run, then type ipconfig /release, then type ipconfig /renew and it will give you a new one.

Or you can access the software and settings of the router itself by opening up an internet page, go to address bar and type and hit enter.
It should bring you inside your router so you can check and switch any settings.

Unable to get wireless connection at a new location

Verizon uses PPOE(point to point protocol over ethernet) and Comast does not use PPOE. Therefore she needs to get inside the router & pdw: admin) to disable the "PPOE". Oh and also, the router needs to be hard wired to the computer for reconfiguration to take place...hope this helps

If it is the Linksys Wireless G WRT54G, then go to this link there is simple instructions on how to setup wireless network.

But, first verify you do have a Wireless card in your laptop. by, hitting Start, Run, then type in CMD in the run box.

When the MSdos(Black window) opens type in IPCONFIG/ALL

this should show all the Network adapters on your machine including your Ethernet and any wireless if avail.

It is usually listed below your LAN/Ethernet settings. It may say something like Intel Pro/100 or 1000 Mobile connection under description. If you dont see a wireless adapter. then go out and buy a Wireless card or a USB wi-fi dongle.
