The unit now speaks?? go figure.
New problem.... I had to go to the same destination 2 days in a row and the system brought 2 different directions. One of the ways it was going to take me was no where near "home" why would it have done this?

No voice

Go to Garmin's Web Updater webpage and download and install the program. Follow the directions to update the firmware and voices. TTS types are "Text To Speech" and will read and speak street names, like "Turn right to Elm Street, etc. Those that lack TTS are standard voices - they will only say "Turn right in 100 feet" in the same place on the road.

Go though the device menu settings and make sure that you have a voice selected "Jack US English" or "Jill US English" are the typical TTS voices chosen for US English speaking drivers.

Good luck!

I have a garmin gps 260. It is only 5 months old. I have owned 2 other gramins, so I am familiar with them. My problem is that sometimes when I turn it on, it does not speak the directions, only shows...

I would do a Firmware update first...

To do that you must connect your Nuvi to you computer using the USB connector..

Go to www.Garmin.com

Update the firmware there

Next I would start with the Language

Go to Tools ......Settings.....Language check that the language chosen is one with ( TTS ) ending.

The TTS are the voice

A have a Garm nuvi 255WT that is supposed to include spoken street names. It speaks well enough, in any language I want, but it only tells me when to turn left, right, etc. It never includes the street...

You need to make sure that the voice you have chosen is a Text to Speech voice (it will say TTS next to it). These voices will speak the street names. The others will not. See if this helps.

My garmin 750 doesn't identify the streets that i should be turning at.Just tells me distance when to turn.

Do you mean it is not speaking the street names? Have you selected a voice that uses the Text-to-speach (TTS) feature? From the main screen press, "Tools", then "Settings", then "Language." Next to the voices that will speak street names, you will see the (TTS) designation. Press one of these and the unit should tell you the street names.

How do I get it to verbalize strret names as opposed to turn right for example it says Q4-01

Your unit must have TTS (Text to speech) for this feature to work. Not all voices have TTS. It is possible that your unit does not have TTS, or that the voice you have chosen does not do TTS. Check to see if there is an alternate voice with TTS.

Help - my Garmin 260W no longer announces street names. How can I get this feature to reactivate????

All of the Garmin automotive GPS units that speak street names are also loaded with basic voice prompts (i.e. 'Turn Right in 500 feet') as well as 'text-to-speech' voices that speak street names. If one of the basic types of voice prompts has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names.
In order to change this setting, please follow these steps:
  1. Touch Tools (Wrench Icon) from the Main Menu
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Language*
  4. Touch on the blue rectangle that corresponds with Voice
  5. Touch on a voice that is labeled with (TTS) at the end. These voices will speak street names. Options without a name or the TTS label will say the distance until the next turn, but will not include the street name.
  6. Touch Ok
The voice has now been changed.

If this is not what you meant, please reply with further details. If you found the solution resolved your issue, kindly take a moment to award this a Fixya rating in appreciation of my efforts.

Thank you.

Garmin 350 sat nav stuck on wrong language can it be changed back to english

What have you tried to do to change it back? Have you tried changing the setting in the menu?
Press the wrench symbol and then the symbol with the lips.

There are 2 settings that need to be changed.
1. Text language (displays the text using characters of the chosen language)
2. TTS (text to speech - the actual speaking voices)

My garmin 760 stopped speaking street names

I had the same problem and wrote Garmin for help. Here is the solution:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'll be glad to help you with this. Please check the voice settings of your Nüvi. Starting on the main menu, select: Tools (wrench)> Settings> Language> Voice. The voice setting should be set on an option with (TTS). This stands for "text-to-speech" and is function of the unit that allows it to speak actual street names.

In other words you must choose a language with (TTS) after it such as American English-Jill (TTS)

I hope this helps everyone.
