Question about Computers & Internet

5 Answers

I am a new customer service rep and cannot login to the company communication server using Avaya IP Agent. I have downloaded and tried to install/uninstall/reinstall the program along with SP1 several times only to get an error message stating "cannot establish TAPI". I am using a brand new HP Pavillion running Vista (SP1). I have turned off every form of software protection on the machine in order to eliminate firewall/protection issues and I have also installed the latest Java Runtime Engine. Another element of this problem presents itself when after logging in to the company's internet website, when I try to login to their secure gateway (using Network Connect), the following error message is displayed, "nc.windows.app.23792". I'm guessing the two issues are related but I don't really know. Can you help? Thank-you, John Holland

Your company's website has a self-signed certificate to validate they

are who they say they are when you connect.

IE for Mac does not "trust" your company's self-signed certificate but

unfortunately it won't allow you to trust it either. That's why your

connection fails. Other browsers such as Safari will allow you to

explicitly trust the certificate and continue.

For OWA, you're not limited to IE. Most other browsers work just fine.

You won't get the same full functionality as IE for Windows, but you'll

have plenty of functionality to do what you need to do.

Hope this helps!

How do I get what I want from customer service?

We all enjoy services like internet, cell, cable, satellite- however we hate dealing with tech support and customer service.
Why?
Multiple factors include the wait time, foreign call centers, perception of inexperience- and rude agents.
How do I get what I want?
For one thing: Be Polite. Yelling at the agent only makes the agent try and find ways to make your life even more miserable- Think how you would respond to someone screaming at you over something you have next to zero control over- it isn't pleasant!
If you are clear with what you want, be it resolution of a billing issue, service went down, or a complaint through service- it tends to smooth the way if you are calm and rational.
Have your documentation/ device that is failing near you
This is often overlooked- however, especially in issues where it's a billing error, having the documentation is essential.
Let's contrast two scenarios: Customer A has been getting overcharged for a cellphone. He has gotten the original contract with the stated monthly price, and has multiple bills showing the correct amount. He contacts customer services and advises of the issue. On the phone, he is polite to the agent, and states clearly that on X month he was overcharged Y amount of dollars. The agent then goes ahead and processes the credit, which then generates the reference number, and the agent advises of the time frame. Customer A documents the reference number- and in the time-frame provided by the agent receives the credit.
Customer B also got overcharged- however did not have the documentation handy when he placed the call- He then promptly swore at the agent stating that the agent was incompetent for not having his records handy. The agent advised Customer B to stop using harassing language- Customer does not think this is a warning, and continues. The agent then disconnects the call, and Customer B is now flagged as an abusive customer.
This is simplified- however similar scenarios have happened daily.
In my personal life, I had purchased a system that had about $250 in rebates. Now, the moment I got the system, I made 2 copies of the invoice, printed the rebate form and sent out the rebate with a copy of the invoice via certified signature required mail. I retained my invoice, which showed the rebate amount. I had the rebate form copy. I also had the signature receipt showing that I sent the letter, and that the letter was signed for at the rebate processing company. I checked the status, and when I noticed that it said it had not received my rebate (I had the signature receipt in hand!) I contacted customer service for that company. When they stated that it could be in processing and to check the status on the website, I politely stated "I have the signature receipt where someone signed for the letter, however the system does not show my rebate was ever received. If you wish, I would be happy to fax that to you right now" The agent then promptly credited the purchasing credit card for the full amount of the rebate- and provided a reference number. I documented this, and true enough, the next statement showed the credit on the credit card's statement.
How I achieved this is through 3 things: I was polite, I had my documentation, and I had already done the research.
The saying is an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure- an ounce of politeness with an ounce of preparation and research meant I had the credit in the full amount of the rebate in 2 weeks versus fighting w/ the PC company and the rebate company for months.
The same goes for hardware- if you've had an intermittent issue, it makes troubleshooting easier if instead of "it drops" you have "it drops mostly when it rains. I powercycle and it comes back on for about 2 minutes, then drops again"
So, to summarize:
If you have to call customer service, call when you have time to work with the agent. Be Polite! Have your documentation of the problem at hand (billing statements, service contracts, log of what issues you have, whatever) Be clear cut in what you want- the clearer the communication, the easier it is to get what you want out of the call Document Document Document! Oh, in case you forgot- DOCUMENT!
By doing these things- you will not only have a less stressful call- you will have a more productive call. (and you won't have to call back!)

DHCP Server configuration in Linux

Linux is a UNIX based operating system. It is a server operating system. REDHAT Linux is Enterprise version of Linux. Now a day's Most of corporate sectors use red hat Linux as server in their company because it is secure very much.

Full form of DHCP "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP server assigns IP addresses and other network configuration information like subnet mask, broadcast address, etc to computers on a network. The DHCP assignments are the following.

Lease Request: Client broadcasts their request to DHCP server with a source address of 0.0.0.0 and a destination address of 255.255.255.255.
IP lease offer: DHCP server replies with an IP address, subnet mask, network gateway, name of the domain, name servers, duration of the lease and the IP address of the DHCP server.

Lease Selection: Client receives offer and broadcasts to al DHCP servers that will accept given offer so that other DHCP server need not make an offer.

The DHCP server then sends an ack to the client. The client is configured to use TCP/IP. Lease Renewal: When half of the lease time has expired, the client will issue a new request to the DHCP server.

Installation of DHCP server: First of all while install the RedHat Linux enterprise version server be careful about the ports and the services must be turned on. To create DHCP server in Linux first download DHCP RPM package and install with "rpm-ivh" command. Where I have done it there I have create YUM server, so easily I have download and install it by YUM (yum install dhcp version). DHCP package will locate in /usr/share/doc/at Linux file system. I copied the DHCP's files from /usr/share/doc/ to /etc/dhcpd.conf.. Then I started to configure the dhcpd.conf file to route the DHCP server in there local network. I have open the configuration file with "vi" command. Then commented out the lines from "default gateway to option netbios" because system don't read the commented lines. After that I set the range of IP address in dynamic- bootp of their local assumption of system. I have change the "next-server" with the dhcp server name and have also change the fixed address with the dhcp server IP address (end range of dynamic IP). It is very easy job to configure DHCP server. After configure the .conf file of dhcp just turn on the service with "chkconfig" command and restart the dhcp service. After that entire job I reboot the system. And after rebooting of server I turned on the other client system. While startup the client system without static IP address all of those picked up IP from dhcp server and going on successfully. I have prefer the command line mode to do the total job.
The DHCP server configure file is following:

ddns-update-style interim
ignore client-updates

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
# The range of IP addresses the server

No ip address

Network Card's driver is not installed. Check and install drivers from Device Manager Window.

IP Address can be assigned automatically(through APIPA/DHCP) or Manually.

Automatic:
There is no DHCP server, it takes the Automatic Private IP address(APIPA) or else get it from DHCP server by using "ipconfig" command
Steps: Start>accessories>command prompt>ipconfig /renew

Manually:
Right click on My Network Places> Properties>Right click on Local Area connection>Properties>General Tab>select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)> Properties>General> select "Use the following IP address> assign IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS> Press OK Tab.

I cannot communicate with primary dns server 172.29.71.1 is there a way i can reset it automaticaly or manually

You cam try doing a power cycle. Turn off the modem, router (if you have one) and your computer. after 1 minute turn on modem first then router and computer. If you still can't communicate or ping the DNS it could be a firewall that is blocking it.

Have belkin wireless/modem router, was using aol but now with the utility warehouse using there uwclub.net service. They sent a thompson speedtouch fixed line modem which we had to connect to get on i.e.,...

Try using a dynamic ip address. I think you only use the static if having problems. Just read this.

A dynamic IP address is assigned to a customer’s modem or router, generally via a remote server (such as our own UWClub server). This provides the user with an IP address from an available pool of addresses every time a connection is made. This is the most common type of IP address for our broadband/Broadcall customers.

Thats off The Utility Warehouse page.

Can't receive my E-Mail

Depends on the (client) program you are using, but...

1) Test your WEB Browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox),
to make sure you can get MSN or Google.

This tell you if the network and the TCP/IP stack are
working properly.

2) If the network is fine, open you email client and check
your server setting for: POP-3, and SMTP.

These setting must match those specified by your
IP service provider.

Also make sure that the email login and server password
are correct.

3) Pay particular attention to the error messages you
get inside you email client, when it fails to access the
server. These should give you a clue:

a) Can't find server / invalid domain name ... etc...
b) Can't login ... user not authorized...
c) No network connection ... denied...

etc...

4) Server and domain name problems indicate a typo or
error in your POP3/ SMTP settings. These are sometimes
changed by the IP provider, so please check with them.
Also check the port numbers:

Port 110 = POP3 = Incoming mail server
Port 25 = SMTP = Outgoing mail server

are typical, but it really depends on th provider.

5) If you can't login, the login ID or password are wrong,
or your provider has closed you account, which they tend
do to with a nasty deliberation if you owe them money.

6) If the email program cannot connect to the internet at
all, but you WEB browser can, then you have a fire wall
problem.

Check these firewall, and disable them temporarily,
to see if it fixes the email problem:

The Windows Firewall: Control Panel === Windows Firewall
(disable it)

Any software firewall you may have installed, such as
Norton's, AVG antivirus...etc. Disable them too.

If you use an external router or residential gateway
to connect to the internet, such as SISCO, CVG, SMC

Log into the router using your WEB browser, and disable the
firewall.

7) Once you identify a firewall problem, you need to setup
exceptions for your email client.

8) If you cannot get any Internet, including the WEB,
then you have a different problem.

a) run the Windows Network setup wizard again,
from the control panel.

b) If you connect directly to the Internet through your cable
or DSL this should fix it.

c) If you still use a telephone modem, that has to be
setup as well.

d) If you use a residential gateway, barricade or router
to connect to DSL or CABLE, then you need to set
that up next using you WEB browser. Typical router
address is: 192.168.1.1

e) In the case of DSL you router may also need to be
programmed with you login/password info, because in
this case it is the router that connects and logs into
your internet provider's server, not your computer.
(your computer sees the router, not the provider.)

Anyway, not knowing what your exact problem is,
I think that I have covered the waterfront here,
hope it helps.

Please rate my answers.

Usually you will have an IP address starting with 169 if the adapter cannot get an ip address from anywhere, it is an autmoatic IP address.
