I have just purchased a dlink dir 635 router and am trying to set it up on my Bigpond cable broadband internet. previously I had only a Motorola SBG900 gateway between cable and pc. I now have the new...
The motorola sbg900 is acting as a router itself. I'm assuming this is what you've got? http://promo.bigpond.com/homenetwork/html_new.php
So first, go into your d-link router settings and make sure the THIRD number in the IP address is the same as your modem's ip address. This third number is the "subnet", and it must be teh same for both router and modem.
e.g. if your motorola users ip 192.168.2.1, make sure your d-link is set to 192.168.2.2. Make sure the fourth number is different, but the 1st 2nd and 3rd numbers are the same.
You can figure out what your motorola's ip is by connecting it to your computer, make sure your interent is working, and then run "ipconfig" from a command prompt window. Look for the "Default Gateway" IP. That's your motorola's ip address.
Once the IP addresses match, go into your router's settings and disable the "DHCP server".
Next, plug a network cable to go from one of the LAN ports on your motorola to one of the LAN ports on your d-link. Note that it is LAN port to LAN port. The "internet/wan" port on the d-link is never used for anything.
At this point your d-link will be operating like a "Switch", it knows it is just an extension of your existing network and it won't collide and cause you problems like it was before.
