First I'd try to repair the installation. Have you tried to do this?

Do you know what virus you have? what anti virus program are you using?

Do you have the XP CD?

Is there anything on the pC that you need to keep/save (docs emails etc)

1) try to download an antivirus program and put it to work it may clear the virus out (if it does well and good)
2) use a usb thumb drive to save any files that are personal
3 Reinstalling windows
boot from cd.
press enter to start installation after a few checks windows will ask where to install either new or repair.
pick new it will then ask where to install pick c:\ enter press f to format or d to delete follow instructions if format use quick when done carry on with installation.
when computer reboots do NOT press any keys or you will go back to install. continue installation computer should finish installation remember any passwords entered.
recommend you partition hard drive so that personal file are saved on 2nd partition

Latoof asks good questions.

First, back up your data. Ask youself what you couldn't possibly live without. Your Outlook email? Backup the PST file. Backup your My Documents folder.

Good instructions on a repair install:

My system is full of viruses. Do i install antivirus and try and remove the viruses or do i need to uninstall windows xp sp2 and reinstall with a antivirus.

The "best practises" approach recommends:
1. backup of your data/music/E-mail files.
2. a "full" format of your C: drive.
3. reinstall Windows from trusted media.
4. install anti-virus software, and update it.
5. run Windows Update, repeatedly, to get all the updates since 2000 (when XP was released).
6. reload your data.

I called MS tech support back asking them to restore the MS office 2003 which was pursed with the virus they purged, but they have not gotten back to me.

Cant you reinstall with the same product key?
I mean, you uninstall and then reinstall the software. At the activation time, when you are calling them, tell them the complaint number (or reference number) that you previously used and say that you have reinstalled the software.

Please help how to format pavilion dv4000 because effected virus. I hope you will help me, thank you. Paul

Before formatting or reinstalling windows try downloading ESET smart security 30 day trial and uninstalling your current antivirus.
http://www.eset.com/.
If you can install it do it. This will surely clean up your computer, if you see everything is fine then there will be no need to reinstall windows.
Remember that a complete windows install will make you loose everything!
From the Windows XP desktop, click Start , All Programs , and then one of the following options:
The following options are for HP computers. Compaq computers will have similar options (for example, Compaq Tools).
1. HP Tools , and then HP PC System Recovery .
2.Hewlett-Packard , hp pavilion pc tools , and hp pc system recovery .
3.PC Help & Tools , and then HP PC System Recovery .
should be ok.

I need to get my micrsoft office 2007 student back. I downloaded it but got a virus on computer now what to do? i stil have the product key!

Uninstall any AV from your computer. Install Avira AV (www.free-av.com). Run a complete scan so you can remove the virus (depending on which one, could be harder than others). if you cant remove the virus or if you do remove it but the Windows is corrupt, you will need to reinstall Windows and then reinstall you have to reinstall Office, with the same product key. I think you can activate your copy up to 3 times. If you can't, call Microsoft and tell them what happen. They WILL activate the copy for you.
I hope this helps. Please rate and provide positive feedback for our fast/free support today. Thank you :D

I have bought mcafee cd from the store and after i restarted the computer my computer freezes at the windows xp screen. how do i fix this?

Hi
I know this may sound childish but the answer right now is to remove Mcafee. Do this by going into SAFE mode. Press F8 while the computer is rebooting. Once at the SAFE menu select SAFE mode with networking. Once into SAFE mode goto START, Control Panel, Programs and Features. From there uninstall Mcafee. I had you go to the network mode because now you will need to download the Mcafee uninstall tool. This will remove the remaining pieces of Mcafee. Once all this is done go to normal mode and please check to make sure you don't have any other anti virus programs installed - these will definitely mess with Mcafee. If there are no other anti virus programs installed I have to assume it was a virus or malware that interfered with your Mcafee install. Unless you have them already I would suggest you download and then run these programs AVGFREE.exe, MALWAREBYTES.exe and SUPERANTISPYWARE.exe. You can download these from www.download.com. Once these are completed, we know your system is clean, now run the Mcafee install and everything should work fine. Good luck

I had windowsxp( not a valid copy) and got a

Hi, this is kind of tricky, only because the virus should had been cleaned, before installing any other programs. Anyway, lets do the following; Uninstall the "Virus" infected copy, click on the "Start button" in the (right menu pane) select to open the Control Panel, in the category, "Uninstall a program," click on it to open, in the Programs "listings" find the ; click on the invalid copy to "highlight," and select the Uninstall button. Next Uninstall the "New copy of "Windows XP.' Note: The process may take some time; be patient! Once the tasks of cleaning the bad programs are complete! Restart the computer. Next, after the computer is back to the Desktop (window); follow the instructions carefully. "After you have completed the "System Restore, you can Install once again the "New Windows XP software. Perform a "System Restore" This is the best option; it will “restore the system” back to a previous state, to undo the change. 1. Go, to: "Control Panel.” 2. Click System and Maintenance. 3. Click Backup and Restore Center. 4. In the (left) Tasks area, click on “Repair Windows using System Restore. 5. The restore “Wizard” appears. 6. Choose (Recommended) Restore Point. Important! “If this, restore point fail? Try again using a different “restore point.” Find the “furthest” (Date) prior to when your computer was functioning normal. 7. Follow all instructions thereafter. *Note:Once the computer returns to Windows Desktop, “do not perform any tasks, for at least (45 min) the System Restore is still running.” "If the solution was helpful, rating it is appreciated! Thanks"

My window xp has a virus & i had 2 anti virus scanner the AVG & TREATSFIRE..avg is not workin anymore but the treatsfire which i download yesterday is workin, he kill the virus and quarantine

I would firstly recommend sticking to the well known antivirus programs. Many of the free ones off the net are viruses themselves. I would suggest trying to boot into XP's safe mode and seeing if you can uninstall your latest antivirus program.
