Electrical Problem 2002 Harley Davidson Roadking police mdl

I'm having an electrical problem with the subject harley. Last year on a ride the bike ran fine until suddenly it stopped as if I turned off the key.No electrical working. After sitting for 2 or 3 minutes I turned on the switch and it started right up. Rode a few more miles and a repeat of this event. At home I checked the battery conections which seemed okay, but I loosened them and tightend them again to be sure. I only rode the bike once or twice with no problems until this year. First trip this year, no problems. Today 10 miles to my brother's house no problem. On the return trip, it shut down again. Then after trying the switch several times, everything lit up and it started up again. 5 miles later a repeat of this scenario. After sitting for a few minutes or so the electric comes back on line and the bike starts. With an intermittent problem like this I don't want to take it to the dealer because it can run fine for miles, and the problem rectifies itself quickly. I'd rather try to trouble shoot it myself if you have some ideas to try when it occurs or things to check before I head out on a ride.
Thanks much for your help!

I have an 03 electra glide that looses all electical power at different times and during different riding conditions. After 30 seconds to a minute later the main breaker resets and I can start the bike again.I was told the system relay was bad and replaced it but I still have the same problem. Do you have any outher suggestions?

1986 sportster with intermitant loss of electical.-- the problems seems to be happening more often and always restarts after 30sec to 2 min. I thought it was heat related but this am it was 80 and happened 4 times. also recently blinkers and neutal lite are intermitant. the neutral lite bet brighter when revs are increased.

I have a 03 anniversary ultra,This problem first happened last summer in traffic.I was told of a factory recall for a faulty main breaker,I called the dealer and had it changed under warranty. My wife and I have just returned from a vacation in 98 degree weather,we had the same problem three times and only at low speed in traffic. It always restarted and ran crappy for a while.I pulled into Skagit Harley and they were kind enough to put another breaker in for me while I waited. Can this breaker be relocated into a cooler area on the Bike?.

Your gonna need a voltmeter and a multimeter to trouble shoot this. Invest in a service manual. They have extensive troubleshooting guide

I had the same problem with my 2003 ultra, after reading this technical support, I did some checking, and my local Harley dealer said that the old main circuit breaker needs to be changed from a 40amp breaker to a 50amp breaker. I was told that there was a factory recall, and at fisrt the breaker was changed with another 40amp breaker. it was then found out that it needed to be a 50amp breaker. I bought and installed my own breaker for around $8, but I was told they would change it for me for free, if I brought the bike in! Due to time restrictions, I chose to do it myself. So far so good. Hope it works for everyone!!!

Bike does not run when warm,

ignition module most likely; what year? is the module in the "cone" on the cam cover? if so, as the bike warms up the "solid state" module in there most likely has an electrical break somewhere that only surfaces when the bike warms up and expands all the "jelly"...very common!

I know this sounds crazy and the only reason I am giving this as a solution is because it happened to me. Even though the electrical system has enough power to turn the engine, it does not have enough power to turn the engine and power to spark. Correct any poor connections at the battery terminals, etc. Try jump starting the bike. If it works, you know the problem is a weak battery and/or a poor connection.

2003 883 sportster wont start

What u are describing is typical of a faulty ignition system, but could also be a fuel problem. I check by removing the aircleaner and rotating the throttle. If u see a nice spray of fuel, thats probably not the problem. Check for a spark at the plugs. I can explain how if you need me to. If you cant see a good spark, U have an electrical problem. I had a crank position sensor go bad on me. Dont do what I did (replaced the battery, ignition, and regulator as part of my diagnosis procedure)

Harley davidson how to change tenttionners

Is your bike STOCK?? Have the Cams been changed? Do you have Stock Cam CHAINS & TENSIONERS, or is it updated to GEAR DRIVEN Cams? Either way, you have a Cam and or Lifter Problem, and if you are not a Harley Mechanic with access to Shop type tools and Equipment, then I suggest you take you Harley to a reputable repair shop for diagnosis and repair. DO NOT CONTINUE TO RIDE WITH THIS PROBLEM, IT WILL NOT FIX ITSELF and will only cause you MORE EXPENSIVE DAMAGE. Good Luck! -Dr.Mark

You didnt mention how you tried to jump it. If it was from a car battery, you could have fried a sensor. If the car you jumped it from was fired up while conneted to your bike, thats the problem right there

Bike won't start

Start by narrowing it down to fire or fuel problem. Pull a sparkplug, ground it to the head, and crank the engine. If there is no spark, then test the plug wires, coil, then ignition module in order down the line until you find where the power stops. If you have spark, then check the petcock to carb for fuel. If there is no fuel from the petcock, then it will be the petcock filter or the petcock is bad. If you do have fuel to the carb, but no to the cylinders, then the carb may need to be cleaned and/or rebuilt. Try these and let me know.

Riding down the freeway on my 1985 FXR, it was 115 degrees, bike stopped running. Have gas, don't have spark at plugs. New coil. New battery. New wires.

lotta possibilities....likely something vibrated loose. i'd start with something simple. after u check electrical connections and fuses,,,,, is the ignition module black lead secured to the frame ? all coil wires secure ? Pull the key ignition....check connections/ crossed? secure ?
