Hello Robert, A leading thing that will make Whirlpool washers not agitate is a broken motor coupler, i have included a video that shows how to replace the coupler. If you take it apart as shown and move the 3 legged cog part of the coupler by hand the transmission should move both directions if you can turn it one way and it spins yet turning it the other direction it does not agaitate the trans. is indeed locked up. Good luck, i hope i have helped you to figure out what is wrong with your washer.

Hello,

while your washer will draining, in addation to the noise during the agitate cycle is it making a similar noise during the drain/spin cycle?
if that is the case the motor coupler is broken

Whirlpool washer agitates but makes a very loud noise

It sounds like the agitator teeth, that are plastic, are worn out. To check this, take the agitator cap off with a strong knife or flat-head screw driver, and check the circular teeth inside, to see if they are worn out. These plastic teeth are the agitator part of the washer, where as the spinning part is a metal set of teeth, at the bottom of the agitator. You see the metal teeth, when you take the agitator completely out. You will have to replace the agitator if the teeth are worn out.

really sounds like a coupler issue. May look fine but if one of the teeth are busted it will do this. You can get a tutorial for fixing this here. http://www.shop.washermd.com/category.sc?categoryId=4

Kemore elite top loader won't fully agitate

If you have a whirlpool built machine th problem is probably the agitator dogs. They are located inside the agitator. My guess since you say it doesn't fully agitate. If changing the dogs does bot fix the problem then the coupler is probably bad and that connects the motor to the agitator.

Whirlpool washer spin cycle noise

Likely you need either an agitator repair kit or need to replace the direct drive clutch assembly. The drive coupler is a fail-safe device and generally fails for a reason. In order to repair the agitator, you will need to acquire an agitator hub nut wrench.
