I have a HP Pavilion d4790y desktop. This morning the screen was all lines of colors that would not go away. I reset, unplugged and shut off the computer. The problem resolved for a short time, and then came back. Any idea what's wrong?

Just match the color of the male and female on each end. Plug the audio cable (mini stereo phone plugs) to the PC audio line out (green miniphone jack) to the Powered speaker mini stereo phone audio line input jack (green color jack). You will have to set the volume controls of the speaker control knob and at the PC on screen volume control panel.
You are not alone with this problem. Some lines (like mine) run vertically rather than horizontally. The solution - sue HP. These screens have a known fault ie the Nvidia graphics chip is known to be the culprit. The company knows all about this issue but expect us to pay to put it right - sue them, you can do it online for around £35 (UK).
