The LCD image generation board is probably at fault. You can test this by squeezing on various parts of the screen, especially along the top and left (?) side. If, when you squeeze the edge, the image changes a lot, or the blank 1/3 comes on, then it's probably the LCD. Replacing the LCD is about the easiest thing to do on the Powerbook. This post is kind of old, so write back if you want more details.

Probably more like a Video cabling issue or a Screen assy getting bad connections.. Both have been seen here.

Good luck!

Reset button on a powerbook g4

The Powerbook G4 power button functions like a reset button if you hold the power button in for a few seconds until the computer powers down.
  1. Hold the power button in for a few seconds (until you see the screen turn off/go black and hear the fans & hard drive stop spinning).
  2. Press the power button again to turn your computer on.
  3. If you have more trouble, you may need to boot in Safe Mode or "perform a Safe Boot":
Press and hold down the "Shift" key immediately after you hear the start-up tone. Release the "Shift" key when the gray Apple icon appears on the screen.

Do you have this machine plugged into AC power? If not, you may just have a depleted battery, which would fit these symptoms perfectly.
The problem is not software related, because with a missing or empty internal drive you would get a flashing question mark folder icon instead.
Does the machine power off when the screen goes black, or does it continue to run with a dark screen? Common solution for the latter is to wait two minutes until the boot sequence sounds complete, then press the F2 button to raise the screen brightness. Failing that, you may have a blown-out backlight tube in the screen itself, which can be addressed.

My powerbook g4 wont start

Your computer is booting into single user mode.

Try to boot from the CD the computer shipped with.

Insert CD and restart the computer holding the "c" key
Your computer should boot.

If so run disk utility from the cd and repair the disk as well as permissions.
If this is successful your computer "should" be repaired. If it still has problems booting, Use your CD to perform a Archive and install which should keep all your personal settings and installed software intact.
