We replaced the ink cartridges

we replaced the ink cartridges on our HP 1220C DeskJet and now it doesn't not work. it didn't even print off the usual "sample" page after changing ink cartridges. the light is blinking continually. i've hit all the buttons, reset the computer, turned the printer on and off, taken the cartridges out and out them back in to make sure they were placed correctly........................

-   I allready tried 4 new cartridges, but none of them gave a good result. Just Pink and black, or nothing but blinking lights. The printer is new, and this is the 1st cartridge replacement. What is the matter with this HP printer?
I use Linux as OS.
