I want to update the IOS on a CISCO Catalyst 2950. I'm connected via console:serial to my Windows 7 Ultimate machine. I've also got PuTTY installed. The internet is being routed thru a Linksys NR041. What configuration changes do I need to make, if any?

What does it mean to Console into the router?

Normally means communicating with the router via a cable attached to a port on the router normally labelled "console". This is the most basic form of communicating with the router for start up config. Usually a serial connection to a PC or laptop using something like Hyperterminal or PuTTY.

Cannot communicate with the access point, no info is sent back via telnet or any other method. I had my friend who sets up networks for a living try for 3 hours to set it up with no luck. He said maybe...

First thing you should try is to console to the device. Cisco has a proprietary console cable (serial on one end, ethernet-like connection on the other end). You can use PuTTy's (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html) Serial option to connect via the console cable. Make sure PuTTy has the correct COM port selected.

To re-flash the device, you'll need the original .bin file or have a valid Cisco.com login to download a new one.

Let me know if you can get connected via the console first.

Cisoc 2950 with odd Problem

I recently had a client switch do this to me. The only way to get it working was to manually put the NIC on my laptop to 10 Mb and Half duplex. After calling Cisco and opening a TAC case, it was deemed faulty hardware.

If you have SmartNet (anyone buying Cisco should always buy SmartNet) on the switch, call TAC and open a case. It's probably faulty hardware.

Good Luck!
