You can, or you can save your money and do it yourself by using a speaker in your car. Open the trunk of your car and you will see the bottom of the speakers that are in the rear window deck, the cone of the speaker has a rather strong magnet on it. Stick the hard drive on it for an hour or so, and if you want to be thurough, you can flip it over and let it bake on the other side for another hour or so. The trunk speakers in most cars have a strong enough magnet to scramble if not completely erase a hard drive. I've seen laptops that have issues after their owner threw them up in the back window while driving around and left them for a while. Those speakers have a pretty good magnetic fields. I discovered this when a young lady brought me her laptop to be reloaded, because her now X had stuck her laptop to the speakers in the trunk because the magnet would hold it upside down and that was cool (IDIOT). The young lady was a nursing student at a local college with a ton of unrecoverable data and class work on her laptop.

Transfering data from damaged motherboard

The motherboard does not store any information. The hard drive stores all the information. If the motherboard is damaged, you have to either buy a new motherboard or remove the hard drive and install it into another computer.

Hello mi problem is wen i turn on mi lapton dell ispiron 2200 apear no bootable devices strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for set up utility, wath i can do? windows xp

Your hard drive's Master Boot Record might be the problem. If it was corrupted then the bios will not see a bootable hard drive.

Three things you have to do in order to solve this.

1. purchase a 2.5" external enclosure, remove the hard drive and put it in there.
2. purchase another 2.5" hard drive for the laptop and reinstall Windows.
3. once the reinstall is done, plug the enclosure into the laptop by the usb cable and copy your data to the new hard drive.

I have a 250GB CrossFire Hard Drive. I tried 2 new power supplies and neither one of them is giving me enough "juice" to power the HD up. The light barely flickers and it is not coming up...

Remove the hard drive and put it into an enclosure. Plug it into another computer as a slave. Then you can copy your files on it.
If it shows up in 'my computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it, you can recover data from hard drive with data recovery program. Asoftech data recovery is a professional data recovery program that can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, system sabotage, virus attack etc.

My Dell Inspiron 1545 will not boot. It is failing some hard drive diagnostics. error code 0146 when running long disk test error code 0f00:075D Disk_0 self test read error and error code 0F00:0232...

Ouch, I hate it when that happens. There are some diagnostics available on the web (or from a buddy) that can be made bootable. Two come to mind:

Ultimate Boot CD for Windows www.ubcd4win.com
Hirens BootCD www.hiren.info

You will need to download the data and then follow the instructions to create a bootable CD. If you're a geek this could be a fun project... if you're not a geek and don't want to spend some time... then don't bother.-, it could be troublesome.

It sounds as if you have already resigned to a new HD or rebuilding your system from scratch... you could borrow a Windows CD from a friend and attempt a Repair. Just make sure to get the same version of Windows.

You can also bring the machine to Staples, Office Depot or some other store that does repair work. If you purchase a new HD and have them install it, they should be able to recover your operating system.

OS (C:) disk failure

More than likely it's just that, your hard drive (the device on the computer where all of the information is saved) is malfunctioning and likely needs to be replaced. This can be done on this model of computer by removing several screws on the bottom of the all-in-one and sliding the back of the machine upwards. Where you can then access the hardware of the computer and then replace the hard drive itself.

My advice will range depending on how fluent you are with computers. If you aren't the best 'techy' person, the best advice I can give is to bring the computer to a local repair place.

Otherwise it would be ideal to download a Hard Drive diagnostic utility (Such as Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test. Pop that in google and download the .iso. Which will then need to be burned using another computer and .iso burning software.) You then would need to place this disk in the Dell and press F12 as the computer turns on, and choosing your cd-rom drive. By following the prompts you would be able to run the entire diagnostic utility, which would be ideal in order to make sure you don't waste time or money on buying a new drive (in the unliklihood that this isn't the problem.)

So your drive failed diagnostics, or your hard drive is bad and you just want to replace it. You would need to buy a new 3.5'' Hard Drive from a local Best Buy or computer store, or even online on such sites as newegg.com. Replace it internally in the computer, and then re-install your operating system using the System Disc that was included with your PC.

This is a bit of a rough synopsis on doing any of this work, but assuming you are savvy enough to understand what I'm saying you can do the work yourself. If you have no idea, then once again I would recommend bringing the computer to a local repair place.

NEED RECOVERY

If you have another computer available, then use it to recover the items. If not take a CD or preferably a DVD and simply copy all the data. If you have need for more space the computer will ask you for another disk, as many as you need. Don't you know that all these fancy things were created so that the consumer will buy them and they will fleece his money. I don't have any of that fancy stuff. Another time we will explain how to buil a recovery system only from existing software and the existing disk.

With no bootable devices, there is no quick fix. It sounds like your hard drive has died on you. Best to buy a new hard drive and re-load.

Noisy Hard Drive

Hey nerjake,

If you are in need of service on your computer, you may always bring it into your local Best Buy™ store location for service and repairs. Geek Squad® agents should be able to provide you with assistance under the manufacturer's warranty, as long as you are able to provide proof of purchase. Typically, a copy of your original receipt or Best Buy Performance Service Plan information is all that's needed in order to verify your warranty coverage.

You may wish to back up any important files you need prior to bringing the unit into your local store however, as software and data recovery work is typically not included in most manufacturer's coverage. Geek Squad® agents can always provide you with this service if necessary, but please remember that operating system and data backup services are an additional charge.

Additionally, the type of noise your hard drive is making can often be an indicator of how quickly you should seek assistance. Any kind of grinding or clicking noises made by the hard drive can often be signs of a serious problem, which may require the hard drive to be replaced.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
