1. I have a problem running X under RH 6.0 on IBM Thinkpad (sorry ..
don't know the model#). At random (as it seems) intervals the screen
goes black, but reappears when I move the mouse. Key-press doesn't have
the same effect. What's interesting is that if I leave the puter alone,
this doesn't happen, in this case the screen-saver works as expected
.... so .. it's only when I'm actually using the machine this problem
appears. ideas ?
I also have a problem (IBM related ?) with the machine really switching
down to powersave, this happends (frequently, and as it seems at random)
at boot-time. The only way to bring the machine back to life,
is to rip out the battery .. (yuk) .. and retry.. ne one got an idea ?
2. The soundcard .. I've checked the news archives for this .. I guess
there's still no solution .. am I right ?

upgrade ..
(the programs I'm running while having the 'screen turnin black' problem
are not that 'strange', it's the X11 terminal, and the gnome editor)

of Thinkpad. These all sound like variations on problems I have had with
my Thinkpad at different times and they were all addressed by BIOS and
driver updates.
When you have the latest system "firmware" installed, if the problems
continue, then take the machine in for service.

For a "true" IBM Thinkpad, the model number is pretty apparent. There are
two types of models that may be on the system - depending on the location.
I'll refer to these as the "product model" and the "Service model". (These
are not official IBM terms. They are just terms that I am using to help make
it clear which set of digits I am refering to.) The product model is usually
readily displayed somewhere on the outside of the case of the machine, or is
displayed when you open the machine cover. The service model is usually on
the bottom of the system and/or sometimes on the inside of the machine when
you open it up. This is usually a seven digit hyphenated alphanumeric. The
first four numbers (always numbers) are the "type" and the next three are
refer to the option package.
For instance, my own system is a Thinkpad 770 ED. This is the product model.
The service model is 9549-5AU. The product model is in the upper right hand
corner of the keyboard when you open the cover. On the bottom of the system
is a label. In the upper left of the label, there is an IBM logo, and "Type
9549" in microscopic letters. The service model is in the lower right corner
of a label on the back of the machine and is labeled "Type". . The serial
number is right after it. directly under it is a barcode. Sometimes the
label will also contain the product model. I have also seen service model
numbers on the back of the system under a little door that covers access
ports, somewhere on the face of the keyboard, on the front edge of the
system, somewhere on the screen border, and sometimes on the back of the
screen.
I've had difficulty on the thinkpad on occasion like what you are having. Is
it only under Linux that this happens? For instance, do you use some wintel
operating system, too, where it may happen? If so, it may be related to a
hardware problem that needs repair.
Secondly, what programs are you actually running? I've had problems over the
years where one program or another causes a problem.
You definately are having a problem with the hardware. Get it in to IBM for
repair. Call 1-800-IBM SERV. But expect to pay for support unless you have
an existing service contract or are under warranty.
What soundcard?
