Question about Toshiba 50H72 50" Rear Projection Television

3 Answers

Two issues I have two issues with my 50h72 I believe one of them is my convergence amps, it looks like this: http://www.fixya.com/support/t419411-re_thanks_much the second issue is intermittent and shows up after the TV has been off overnight and we first turn it on in the morning: I suppose I should start with changing my convergence amps, then address this issue, but since I will have my TV gutted, it seemed worth fixing two issues whilst I have it apart.

The convergence problem is either bad solder connections on the pins of the convergence ICs or defective ICs. Intermittant problems often are just bad connections. Resolder any joints that appear grainy or have rings.

1: Try a hard reset by unplugging the power cord for 4 hours. That may clear up the problem if it were caused by a corrupted software code internally.

2: Try resetting any of the OSD items that may have anything whatsoever to do with picture parameters.

3: If you dare, go into the service mode and see if you can find anything that touches on this problem.

4: Call the Toshiba representatives and inquiry if they have a simple solution.

5: Take the set in for warranty repair if the set is still under the warranty program. (Or rather, have them come to your home as this is not the kind of set that is easily lugged around!).

I would suggest to replace the STK ICs first as suggested in your previous post and you might end up fixing both failures.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Above is your service manual, i believe your problem will most likely be the STK device Stereo audio output amplifier, developing a fault, either that or the power to the Amp is compromised, so as always start with the Power supply first and work out. Replacing the STK device is not too hard, you need a desoldering tool, and a good 40 watt soldering iron with a fine tip and some rosin cored solder.

Also have a look at this master google link, have a look regarding the stk replacement in particular.

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture
