You have to get codecs before you can't play DVDs.You can get them free at www.filehippo.com.Get the codecs pack install it then your Media player should then play DVD movies.

When you say play DVDs you mean watch DVD movies? Assuming the drive is not broken you need to use the DVD app. You could use VLC Player which you can download. It's an orange traffic cone icon.
Don't play what? Games? Movies? If you mean movies, you can try Artisan DVD player. This will only play DVD movies if your laptop has a DVD-rom. If you only have a cd-rom, no software will help you play a DVD movie. You can get the software free here:
You need to use the software to play DVD movies. Try using windows media player to start the DVD or if the computer came with DVD playing software then try it. You can also check the Dell site and download the latest driver package and install the drivers. It might be missing the dvd rom driver. When you put in the DVD does it autoplay and ask you what software to use to open the disc? You can also go into the control panel and check the device manager. Check and see if the dvd rom is a problem device and/or try to update driver for the device. Have you tried different dvds? Maybe it is having a problem with just that DVD. Some DVD's will not play in a computer but will play in a DVD player.
Try going to sony's website and downloading the firmware update for your player. The Blu-Ray format changes so much that sometimes the newer movies will not play without an update. You will need to download the firmware and burn it on a cd-rom. Pay special attention to the instructions....there is a certain procedure and if you do not follow the instructions you can damage your player.
If you have CD/DVD that is enclosed to the DVD rom from the vendor, you should install that specillay the Player that is build with the DVD decoder.
Any way if you wan to play movie using the PC with the DVD Rom, You can use the Player that have a multiCodec and all the Movies in the DVD can be play.
