The loud buzzing sound with no heating, is symptom that the magnetron has failed in your oven. Magnetron replacement cost are almost as much as new oven, so it does not make financial sense to repair. Sorry.

I have a Samsung SMH9187 about three-four years old I think. It does not heat -- everything else works. When turned on it at first makes a grinding type noise and sparks can be seen inside where the motor...

The magnetron won't make a grinding noise so that makes it sound like the fan motor bearings are bad. However if it doesn't heat, that sounds like the magnetron.

My panasonic will run for about six seconds and stops, and smells like burning wires and it shows a message "SENSOR RE-HEAT PRESS START"

If it stops after 7 seconds, it has a problem with the inverter.

If it stops at 16 seconds and is a sensor model, it probably has a defective humidity sensor. But I don't think that's the issue here.

It may be a loose connection in the wiring between the inverter, magnetron, and/or control board, or maybe one of those components has failed.

Due to the lethal voltages used and produced in inverters, I do not recommend that an inexperienced person work on these.

If you have that funny burning smell in the microwave oven This is sure sign the magnetron has failed, and must be replaced.

Our microwave has stopped working for the second time in two years. When you try to heat something, it hums but not quite like it is heating. There is also a funny smell.

SAFTY FIRST

UN -PLUG IT,,,,, THAT "FUNNY SMELL" SOUNDS LIKE IT IS SHORTING OUT
PERHAPS THE MEGATRON HAS GONE BAD, THE MEGATRON IS THE

AS A EX- FIREMAN, I KNOW FROM FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE THAT
"A FUNNY SMELL " OR " UN-USUALL SMELL COMING FROM AN ELECTRICAL

When I start the microwave, it has a funny smell

Sounds like you burned out the magnetron, if so you should discontinue use immediately. This is the bit that emits the microwaves and they will fail with a burnt faintly oily smell to an acrid chemical smell. Magneton replacement should not be attempted by the amateur fix-it man, Find a reputable appliance repair shop or chuck it in!

GE Spacemaker microwave won't heat food

hello kmwnky,
You say that Everything went out at first ( which I assume means that all functions went dead) and then functions started to operate again later... if that is correct and you smelled something burning.. you may have a thermal fuse that failed, filament transformer that failed, magnetron tube that failed or a highvoltage capacitor that failed.. None of these components are something the untrained person should attempt to trouble shoot or replace since there are dangerous energies stored inside the electronics compartment even after power is removed.. Your Micro is > 8 years old and it's probably not worth the cost of repairing at this point. You'd be better served replacing it.. The cost to repair would exceed the cost to replace.. ( I feel like the grim reaper here..sorry..)
Regards,
Rick
