own a hp notebook and have no backlight. the strange part is that I plug an external monitor and the screen works for a couple of seconds and then loses its signal! the rest of the computer appears fine and the screen on the laptop is visible that it still works even if really dark. having gone through a few forums it seems that the inverter or the backlight is potentially the culprit! will take it back under warranty and I will let everyone know what the outcome is!

This question is to the guest that posted a solution to a big problem with a very simple fix(Fn & F4)!

i have already sent the computer for warranty repair. But somehow i would feel really stupid if it was something that easy! Could you please elaborate what the Fn & F4 do to the computer that makes the screen work for future reference! Some of these simple fixes could help a lot of people out there and also save themselves expensive fixes.

    thank you for the help.

You have lost the lcd backlight, probably the backlight power supply, this is very common. What type of laptop is it?

Acer laptop switched on light up on switch but no screen display

A blacked-out screen doesn't necessarily indicate a broken monitor. If the computer has run out of charge or is in hibernation or sleep mode,

if the screen is too dark, or if the display cable has come disconnected from the motherboard, the screen may appear black or fail to turn on.

To fix a blacked-out laptop screen, troubleshoot the screen settings, check the LCD connector and see if the computer is awake and receiving power.

Touch the touchpad or move the external mouse to see if the computer is asleep or hibernating. If the computer fails to respond, press "Enter" on the keyboard.

Press the power button if the screen remains black. Confirm that the power indicator light, found at the front of the computer or above the keyboard, is glowing solid green or blue.

Confirm that the power adapter is plugged into the computer and into a wall outlet. Confirm that battery indicator light is glowing solid green or blue.

Hold down the "Fn" key. Press the up-arrow to see if the screen brightness increases. Some computers also use the "F6" or "F7" keys to increase screen brightness.

Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off the laptop. Remove the AC adapter from the computer, close the screen, and then turn the PC over.

Slide the battery latch to eject the battery. Pull the battery out of its compartment.

Turn the computer back over, open the lid, and insert the edge of a flathead screwdriver or other flat, solid object beneath the bezel above the keyboard.

Wedge the edge of the keyboard bezel off of the top cover. Work your way along the edge of the keyboard bezel to loosen it. Pull the bezel off the laptop.

Trace the cable coming from the laptop screen to the connector found beneath the bezel. Reconnect the display cable to the motherboard if the cable has come loose from the connector.
Line up the tabs on the bezel with the slots along the top of the keyboard. Insert the right edge of the bezel into the gap above the keyboard, and then push the bezel back in place.

Turn the computer back on. If the laptop screen is still blacked out, connect an external monitor to the video port on the side of the PC to confirm that the video card isn't defective. If the external monitor works, the LCD screen could be broken.
If the monitor doesn't work, the motherboard or video card might need to be replaced.

hope this helps

My hi grade laptop screen is not coming on

Try connecting this to an external monitor, see if it gives an image,if it does, you will need to check the inverter and back light of the laptop screen.
if it is the backlight at fault, you should see a faint image on the screen in a darkened room
If it is the inverter, the screen will remain black with no image.

Top replace the backlight, the screen itself must be replaced ( approx. cost £60.00 used)
Replacing the inverter approx cost £10.00.

neither are difficult jobs, but the cost may outweigh the value of the laptop if it is the backlight.

Knowing Hi-Grades though, the above points are academic. I'd be 90% certain that the graphics chip has failed ( no picture seen on external monitor). this is very common with hi-grade laptops, as the cooling to the graphics chip is very poor. Sadly in this case, you will need to replace the motherboard, the cost of which will certainly not be worth it

Hi there i have got windows 7 on my laptop and i have got afew older games for windows 98 which i cannot play would i be able to download a driver for windows98 on my laptop to play them thanks

In the computer world, Windows 98 was a very long time ago. I have many such games and would like to play them as well, If they will not play when you loaded the software, it is not likely you will find a patch to make them run.

I suggest you visit the software manufacturer sites and see if they have a updated version of the game.

If you find otherwise, please post a comment here to this quesiton.

My screen on my laptop went black.

Theres is a lot of reason associating to a black screen. First lets just assume it the screen and not the laptop. Check to see if you still see any image in the screen, you might want to do this in a lighted area. If you do, but is very dark, then your backlit light is dead and your screen needs replacement. If you don't see anything, then use a external monitor such as a computer monitor, a Tv and connect via VGA port, or HDMI if you have one or a svideo to an external souce and see if you get picture, If you do, then your Inverter is bad, or either a loose connection wiring somewhere between your comuter base and your screen. ( Because laptop tend to open and close alot) If you don't get anything via external source through your VGA, HDMi or s-vdeo, then this is something involved with your laptop. Could be from cpu, chipset, ram, or simply the motherboard itself.

I can not play game in my laptop.when i open the game it says can not connect to d3d device.check directx.what will i do?

Hi!

Microsoft DirectX is a software for handling multimedia task, video and game programing. You can download DirectX compatible for the operating system that you use in your laptop.
here are the list, select the file suited for your operating system, click it and save to start downloading, once finished, install it on your computer.

1. DirectX10 - windows vista sp1 & sp2

2. DirectX 9.0c - windows xp sp2

After installing the right directX for your operating system, try to play the game and direct 3d settings will work..

Please rate if this solution work...thanks..

Lap top on but no display

  • First thing to do is to plug your laptop into a monitor. 99% of laptops i have seen have a monitor connection on the rear or somewhere on the laptop.

Then if you are certain the machine is working ok, you can look closer at the screen being the problem. It may not be the problem. For laptops with dead screens out of warranty, making it an IMmobile computer by adding a monitor is often a good solution. Turn it into a PC. Most laptops will also have somewhere to plug a mouse and keyboard.

  • need to hook an external monitor up to it at least once to isolate the problem. So you can find out if it is the on-board video or some other internal component in the laptop playing up, or if the screen is simply shot.
  • hope your problem will be over

Acer 7520 laptop screen extremely dark

It may be that your backlight has burnt out, or your LCD inverter has gone bad, if you can hear a high pitched sound coming from the screen it is more than likely the converter, you can order replacements online...

New screen will not show anything

Hate to tell you this but it sounds like a backlight inverter problem. This was the piece you undoubtedly saw at the bottom of your monitor when you took it apart. It's a small chip that goes out sometimes, usually way before a monitor itself goes out. The old monitor might have been working just fine.

The part is about $20 on e-bay if you want to look it up and it is a relatively easy fix. Hope this helps.
