T42 thinkpad wireless card sees networks but cannot obtain an ip

If your wifi password is wrong it will appear to connect to the wifi, but you will never get an IP.

You an also check in your properties and make sure it's set to automatically get the IP. If you have an IP set in there manually that could cause this.

How to turn on the wireless switch on my IBM T42

There isn't a switch on the T42. (I'm using one to write this). the Function (Fn) key toggles the adapters but only if the correct utility is loaded. That is on the lenovo site called 1qkcb9ww or 8jvu12ww. Not sure which controls those features. If Fn+F5 doesn't do it...
You otherwise usually get that message when there is a network adapter conflict and sometimes if the driver has become inactive which it does not too often. Try first disabling any other network adapters like Ethernet and maybe even the infrared network adapter though I doubt that could be it. Mine is disabled anyway. Do this in 'Network connections' from control panel for the Ethernet or with Device manager (Systems>hardware>device manager) if you never use a wired connection. If that doesn't help try reinstalling the drivers from the Lenovo site.

Where is the 'Wireless Switch' on the IBM T42

The T42 has a bulit-in wireless network adapter and a LAN network card. T42s most likely have an Intel wireless card or less likely a Cisco wireless card.
Your wireless network adapter may have been disabled in the BIOS
and/or
The drivers for the wireless network controller has not been installed.

To check the network adapter go to the Control Panel, Click on System, click on Hardware Tab then Device Manager. Then scroll down and click on Network adapters. If you don't see your network controller or you see a yellow ? against Other devices for the Network controller. Then either it has been disabled and/or the driver was not installed.

To get the driver for the network controller you need to dowload it from the IBM/Lenovo WEB site their support/download page from a computer that has Internet access. Make sure you select your laptop model and the driver for your Windows version.
Install the driver and you then need to configure the wireless adapter to suit your wireless router settings before you can access the Internet.

This will help. Thanks please keep updated. please do rate the solution positively .Thank you for using Fixya

My wireless card on my T42 ThinkPad doesnt pick up wireless networks. I'm not sure its even installed.

Check Device Manager to see if the wireless card is enabled and working. If it has a yellow ? against it then the wireless card driver was not installed.
Some model ThinkPads have different network cards drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the network drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.
When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it’s file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.
Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).
