Try using the manual eject that is as small as a pinhole just below or beside the CD drive. Once you find out that you can manually eject you may be able to insert a cleaning cd to clean the device.

If that doesn't work check device manager to see if it has the proper driver or if it's recognized that it's installed in the system.

If they were both working on separate machines, the answer must lie in how you have configured them on your PC.

Remember that your dvd/or cd drive would be the SECONDARY MASTER. If you have both cd drive and dvd drive set as master, this may cause your PC to not recognise them.

Look on the back of the cd drive and the dvd drive - at the small jumper switches, which fit onto pins. There will also be a diagram on the drive somewhere. Look for CSM C= cable select (let the computer choose which is which. M= Master, which means you set that particular drive as the secondary master. S- slave. You set whichever drive as the slave.

The drive on the end of the cable (furthest away from the motherboard) should be set as MASTER. Any other drive on that same cable should be set as slave.

No, the southbridge simply is no longer working properly - the PATA controller to which the optical drives are connected has failed. The motherboard is dead, you must replace it.

Well the fact that when you put in a cd it does not see it indicates that either the CD Drive is not being detected or the drive has gone faulty and needs replacing.
First Look in the bios of the computer to see if it is seen the drives section. If it is there then look in windows under control panel , system, device manager. Now look under DVD/CD Roms drives (this may differ slightly in XP) to see if in there with no error against it. If not and not in the bios either then the drive has failed. If however it shows in DVD/CD Roms with no error then try a different make of cd/DVD. If this works then the Bios of the drive will need updating. This info is on the manufacturers website. Good luck.

the hard drive IDE cables are flat, ribbon cables, usually grey and about 3 inches wide. do not confuse this with the floppy drive cable, which will look identical, except that it is 2 inches wide.

the cable could be loose on either the motherboard IDE controller end or the hard drive end, so wiggle it in tighter, or unplug and then re-plug it at both ends, and then try to boot. if that does not work, then replace the cable.

if a new cable does not fix it, then the hard drive itself may have failed. install the hard drive in a DIFFERENT working computer as a secondary (slave drive) by installing it to the middle connector of the IDE cable (IDE cables have a connector for the "master" or only drive at the end, and a plug for a "slave" drive in the middle of the cable), and see if you can access it. it will probably show up as the "E" drive under "computer" or "my computer". if it does not show up, check and see if it shows up under "administrative tools>computer management>disk management". if the drive is not showing up, then it is dead. if the drive works in the second computer, then the IDE CONTROLLER is the culprit.

if the motherboard's integrated IDE controller is dead, you may want to try the OTHER IDE controller socket. most computers from that era have 2 IDE controller sockets, and usually attach the hard drive(s) to one, and the cd/dvd rom(s) to the other. since the hard drive cables have plugs for 2 devices, you can attach both the hard drive and a single cd/dvd drive to the 2nd ide controller socket, in cases where the 1st ide controller soocet no longer works. attach the hard drive to the end of the IDE cable, and the cd/dvd drive to the middle of the IDE cable, as the "master" or boot device should always be attached to the end of the IDE cable.

you can also purchase an add-in, pci card ATA/IDE controller card, and use this instead of the motherboard's integrated IDE controller sockets.

My dimension 5150 does not burn cd's any more

CD/DVD drives are even less reliable than the cheap power supplies generally used in packaged PCs. Of two new, brand-name drives by Lite-On, one was DOA and the second ran for 2 days.

You can try removing (deleting) the drive from the Device Manager list, then rebooting. If the drive is at all usable, Windows should 'find' it and reinstall the driver needed.
If this doesn't work, the drive is likely dead.

CD Drive not working at all

If its the only CD Drive on that IDE cable it wouldn't be set as slave, would be on Master.

Yes you can go to http://www.driverguide.com you can download updated drivers for IDE and SATA on your PC.I checked on Acer support but there website isnt't working correctly for me.

Try updating the drivers, and try both drives again one at a time.
